Good morning from Hakuba.

It was a generally cloudy day yesterday for the most part with some blue sky and a bit of sunshine at times.

This morning there is no fresh snow to report in the village and none of the resorts are reporting any fresh snowfall either (at both lower and upper areas).

There's lots of cloud around this morning too and it is a cold -4 degrees here in the village.

It looks set to get colder still over the weekend especially on Sunday when potentially we will be enjoying heavy snowfall. The snow is due to start falling sometime around lunchtime tomorrow and get heavier from then on. Let's hope the snow is not accompanied by strong winds that affect lifts.

It's really great to be able to report that most of the resorts are now 'mostly open'. It has taken a while! We're still not there yet though - perhaps the forecast heavy snowfall over the weekend might just be what we need to be able to declare 'fully open'.

Talking of the snowfall that we received...

---

...The Tree Riding Zone at the Hakuba 47 resort opens from today. Well, the lower section of it.

These ungroomed areas are found off Route 2 and 3 within the resort itself, and only registered members can enter via the designated gates. They are not supervised like the normal resort courses and only advanced skiers and snowboarders who are knowledgeable to cope with situations like avalanches and helping others as well as having the right equipment should be using it.

The Tree Riding Zone opens once the patrol guys have checked for safety and if all goes to plan until 3pm, though this can always change due to conditions on the day.

If you wish to ride this area you need to register and sign a consent form at the School Center and take a quick lecture. You'll receive a rather fetching 'bib' to wear while you are in the area. This bib is to be returned by 3pm and acts as a check that you have returned safely. (Once you have registered, from the second time you can just exchange your ID card for the bib).

Beacon, shovel and helmets are strongly recommended. An important thing to understand is that by using this area you are skiing and boarding totally at your own responsibility and the resort takes none in the case of any kind of accident. This means that if you need rescuing etc, you will need to pay all the associated charges. (The resort will also send out search and rescue if the bib is not returned by 3pm and that will be charged too. So keep an eye on the time!)

Not for everyone but something of a different experience.

---

I promised night skiing info today. Apologies, I will get that sorted by tomorrow.
