This morning the rosy fingered dawn was definitely playing on the Hakuba/Shirouma San Zan (the three peaks of Yari ga Dake, Shakushi Dake and Shirouma Dake). There is 11 cm of new snow of moderate density (80 kg/m3) this morning in the valley floor. There is evidence of a small wind event during the night with some snow drifted across roads adjacent to open areas. With the forecast of clearing skies and moderate temperatures the bit of new snow on the firm base should provide a good medium for sliding fun.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) the 0630 hr. reading is:
Sky: broken cloud
Temperature: Present: -4.5 C
Maximum: 6 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: 924 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 11 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 76 cm
Foot penetration: 24 cm
Surface: new snow, size 2 mm
Density of new snow: 80 kilograms per cubic meter

Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. the hazard may increase with daytime warming and may be higher due to an as of yet unknow, but strongly suspected, wind transporting wind even overnight.

Travel Advisory:
Good visibilty and the promise of good quality powder snow on most aspects should get more than a few legs working in honest labour. We now have probably something in the order of 30 cm (adding measured new snow amounts) covering the January 17th surface hoar. It will be interesting to see if and where this layer reacts to shear tests. Ski cutting of sheltered (from sun and wind) unsupported rolls would be a good quick and dirty option with the January 17th layer still not too deep.

The significant wind event of last night may or may not have affected the tree line and above areas. Keep tabs on this as you push out there. Daytime warming will probably raise the level of the hazard.

Good hunting!
