Well it is a drab spring day - not raining yet not sunny either. After a great weekend of sun and fun on the slopes of Hakuba's mountains with the YKK National Moguls, the first annual Evergreen Tri-Modal Challenge on Happo One, The Hakuba 47 2005 Demo tour and Giant Slalom comp & the Academy Rail & Jump Jam happening on Tsugaike all finishing up, Hakuba seems like a ghost town at present. The Slopes are soft spring snow at the base and nice firm corn at elevation with very few people on them however - which makes for great cruising top to bottoms. The weather for the next few days will be overcast with some sunny periods through to the weekend. It does not look as though there will be any precipitation, just cloudy skies. Winds are calm and temps are hanging around 5 degrees in the valley and the freezing level is around 2200 metres. All in all, good wide open slopes through to the Golden week holiday when the mountains will see the last crowds for the '04-'05 season.

Avalanche warning:

It is Spring conditions and the snow pack has warmed up significantly over the last 2 weeks causing large cracks to open and many areas to release to ground. This will persist until all snow either fails and falls or it melts and sends copious amounts of snow melt water to the valleys and rivers below. With water transport in and under the snow pack slopes of over 20 degrees have the ability to release. Be very cautious in deep valleys below large loaded and cracking slopes and around cornices, especially in periods of strong solar radiation or rain. It is at these times that water transport and snow temperature is increased and so also avalanche hazard.
