Well, the forecast said it may clear up today... nope! Another 50 cm on top overnight and still coming down heavy. If you haven't booked your ski/snowboard trip to Hakuba yet, what are you waiting for?! Get your gear and head for the slopes!

All the areas have a great base and it looks like all runs should be opening soon. Cortina has opened up today and no doubt will be awesome!! Hope to see you out there.

Afternoon update:

One word says it all. AMAZING! It just keeps coming down harder and harder. It is presently snowing 5 cm an hour in the valley and more than this on top. What was groomed this morning has another 30 or so cms on top of that now. It has been snowing so hard now that the locals are getting scared of the thought of all the snow shoveling they haven't done and what a task it is going to be when they get the time to get in to it. Since yesterday, at this time, it has snowed about 80 cms! There is so much snow it is getting hard to see out first story windows. There is very little wind activity to speak of and temperatures continue to be mild so the snow in the valley is slightly heavy and settling fast, compacting and creating a great base to flatten down all the shruberies and ensure a great holiday season in Hakuba.

Well just with all of the heavy snowfall we start to be concerned with snow sliding on steeper slopes and if it does we could be talking big results. The snow at the pessent temperatures and lack of wind will allow for good settling with in the snow pack, thus allowing for rounding and bonding to occure. The thing to watch out for is sudden changes in the temperature and incresed wind volocity. If we experience strong winds now we will experience a lot of rapid transport of snow from the windward slopes to deposit on the lee slopes. Soft cornices will also be forming. So do take care out there. Some times the most dangerous slopes are the small insignificant ones that we some time over look as a danger to us. These are the ones with generally the most amount of terrain traps and where groups may not be as concerned about spacing. Remember that with a lot of new snow the moving is slow and this makes for a very dificult rescue and evacuation. With all the fresh powder to be had on the resorts and the poor weather conditions there is little reason to be heading into the backcountry at the present.
