She is a chilly one this morning. The skies have broken and heat has escaped the valley through the clear night leaving us with a chilly blue bird day with wispy light powder on and off the piste. Only a slight trace of new overnight but the cold dry air should have sucked some of the moisture from the snowpack and left us with lighter snow then yesterday.

Todays temperature will rise durring the day with solar radiation.

There has been rapid settling within the last couple of days in the snow pack. This should help to stabilize the pack but be aware that there are still layers in the upper 70 cm of the pack that will still be sliding. Be careful of the New Years day sun crust as with the low temperatures this will not be breaking up and there is a chance that faceting may be occurring below this crust if low temps persist. Thick wind slab will still be lurking in pockets and chutes, so be very careful in steep terrain especially around rocky outcrops and when moving from thin snow pack areas like wind scoured ridges.

Be aware of rising temperatures and intense solar radiation on Southern exposures as this might warm things up in the upper snow pack and loosen one of those slabs over the sun crust.

AVALANCHE HAZARD: CONSIDERABLE

Natural Avalanches possible. Human-triggered avalanches probable.

Unstable slabs probable in steeper terrain.

Be increasingly cautious in steeper terrain. (>30 degree slopes)
