Good morning from Hakuba.

A fine day yesterday even though a fair bit of cloud remained.

This morning is a different kind of start - it is a beautiful morning. Almost completely clear blue skies above Hakuba with just a few tiny baby clouds here and there.

Quite cold early on but with the sun shining down on us it will feel pretty warm out later on. Forecast temp of around +5C this afternoon in the village. More sun and slightly warmer temps due tomorrow.

-----

Happo-one made an announcement yesterday and instead of re-phrasing them, I'll post the message in their words:

"The winter season has ended & we can now enjoy the spring ski conditions at Happo-one. With the warmer temperatures the snow base at all bottom areas melts away, some areas faster than others. The slope condition at Nakiyama night slope is thawing & we have made the decision to end night ski on Saturday 2nd March at 9:00pm. The final night ski of the season! From Sunday 3rd March Nakiyama #2 pair lift daily operating hours will be from 8:00am - 5:00pm until further notice.”

So, tonight is the last ‘nighta’ at Happo-one. I will keep an eye on other resorts and try to add some other late season information to my reports in the coming days.

Some lower slopes are going to start struggling in the coming weeks and so will the resorts be able to open until Golden Week in early May?

The official word is still that Golden Week should be ok. Remember, there's still a good 2.5m or so of snow up there, and of course it is much higher (and colder) up there than down by the village.

It might feel like spring but there are decent conditions to enjoy on the upper areas and there's lots of spring fun to be had - as long as expectations are set to 'spring', no worries. And it always feels good to be out on a day like today.

And hey, we might get some more fresh snow. In fact, mid to late week (next week) is actually looking quite promising. :)

Have fun!
