precipitation condition
Sodden mist, not drizzle or rain, but definitely a lot of moisture in the air.

Very still today and that is a blessing given the general gloom.
Fair to good. In town I can see the approximate 400 metres of my horizon but not the resort which is about 3km away.

In a word: gloomy.

In two words: really gloomy. In three words: really, very gloomy. Any more words than that and I cannot trust myself not to swear.

But apparently this lingering mist at town level is falling as a very slight snow up on the resort. There isn't enough moisture to make rain so there wouldn't be enough to make real snow either. A dusting up top makes sense because it is 1C in town, so it would be about -2 or -3 up the top with this cloud cover.

But the temperature is forecast to reach 4C in Furano town today and if it does, that will probably put it above zero on the resort. Which, if there is precipitation, could be terribly unpleasant.

This morning I ran into some of the international ski school teachers and they were heading up the hill for their pre-season induction training. So that's encouraging, right? And I just met a jolly Singaporean family of three going for their first on-ski experience. Hope that works out... I urged them to hurry.

But my personal measure of misery is sleet and I am delighted to report that there was no sleet beneath my feet when I did my 8.58am dash from car to office. I was definitely surprised. But it was slippery so I chose to run on the verge which was heavy, softened snow. But definitely not slushy at this stage. My boots were dry when I reached the door. Amazeballs.

So back on the gloomy, misty weather, it isn't actually raining or even drizzling. But there is a heavy, moisture sodden mist I would describe as bleak. I saw one person with an umbrella this morning but I didn't use one and I didn't get wet.

It's not windy. At least we have that.

And this morning we rang friends at Asahidake and it was snowing there, with the cross country tracks at the base of their ropeway fully open. So that's good. If it's snowing there it is also snowing at Tokachidake which had a good metre of snow when we visited earlier in the week but needs about a metre more to cover the scrub entirely and make it more inviting for backcountry skiing.

The fact that I didn't get out of my car to take this photo of the resort today kind of says it all. Taken just before 9am in Kitanomine.
