They can all mean the same thing, but can also be different.

 

Here in Australia, guys use "mate" a fair bit. I use it a lot at work when talking with customers, but i work in a very laid back place. It is "slang" but is also friendly as well. Although, if said with the right tone, it can also be "rude".

 

Buddy isn't used so much over here, i think its more of an American and Canadian thing.

i use buddy heaps but thats when im playing softball its a good encouragement... so its a part of my weekly vocab!

 

maaaattteee.....! quality word!

 

i use dude heaps more than matttteeee...!

 

all means "hey u!" etc!

 

oi mate, oi buddy, oi dude.... oi friend?!

Well I have lots of bloke mates, and I certainly don't have sex with them eek.gif

 

So I think the conclusion, akibun, is that people from different countries use the words differently.
