One of my favorites is 'A Bronx tale'. It's told from the perspective of a kid growing up amongst the mafia. Dinero is his dad who is a bus driver and attempts to keep him out of the neighborhood gangs. Lots more to it. A great film.

"Goodfellas" would be my second favorite with 'Casino' coming in close also (for 'modern' gangster films)

For Yakuza films, what about 'Kill Bill, Vol. one'? \:D

edit - as far as them existing, yes they do. Just watched a story today, as a matter of fact, on a gangster on 60 minutes. Very interesting story. I think most of what the movies are based on happened in the 70's and 80's, but it for the most part is pretty true. Knock out the hollywood drama and you're getting a pretty fair picture of real gangster life.

Oh, and if you want a great comedy (but not over the top) on gangsters, watch 'My Blue Heaven' with Steve Martin. Classic - I own it. Love that movie \:\)

Funnily enough I always thought too that until I saw Godfather #1 and #2 again a few weeks ago. Now I think they are beautiful timeless classics.

Scarface, however, is over-rated.

Danz - The Untouchables was so bad. Was like a Marvel comic. Never thought it would end. Not a good pick. Sean Connery, Kevin Kostner in a ganster flick. Not a good movie.

Godfather 2 is hard to follow in Japan. Half is in Italian so I can't understand it.

But for good ones so far
