We all like a good `ol moan to our mates, and on this discussion board about how Japan can be a nightmare at times, with ridiculouslly complicated beaurocracy, petty rules, and "dirty Ramen shops"!! However what about the flip side, what do you love about Japan? After all there must be some pretty good things to keep us all living here!!??

I`ll take starters for 10.....

heated toilet seats for snow chilled butts

the general lack of aggro

the food, but I love that anywhere

powder snow

lower tax than home

friends and family

judo massage and chiropractors covered by national health insurance

the countryside

good looking girls almost everywhere you look

proximity to other Asian countries

camping

outdoor festivals

hiking

living in the city on a sunny non-work day

usually enjoyable work and my flexible schedule which gives me plenty of free time during the day

the half Japanese daughter I'm about to have and the amazing wife who is doing all the work

There ya go. All warm and fuzzy isn't it.

Agreed with Sir Dims and in addition:

1. Amazing train system in Tokyo (but I *hate* rush hour crowds)

2. The respect many Japanese people have for the public good. Little vandalism is evident. Many western countries could learn from this.

3. The pride that people have for their jobs and contribution to society (which is usually minimal). In Australia, meaningless jobs are usually done by people with meaningless minds and the level of performance is appalling. In evidence, just try speaking to anyone working in a Sydney train station.

I like a few things and am glad I have experienced them, but overall there is nothing in this country besides money that merited 2 years of my life. Six month in Japan is more than enough for me. None the less I have so far given Japan 2 of my years and so have developed a Stockholm Syndrome kind of relationship with it.

I miss the **real world** so much that I have started to run around the streets of my suburb naked save for a pair of oversized school girl white socks and throwing human excreta at houses whilst yelling out “abunai, I am reversing, abunai, I am reversing!!”

ooh, I thought of another one - the maids are really cheap out here!

When my roomie was deployed, no problem - I'm a clean guy. He's a slob though and we need it now. The mama-sans do a fantastic job for around 10,000 a month. Can't beat that \:\)

Oh I forgot,

Kara-age

Boots and skirt combos

Di-jockys

Totally agree about the sense of safety, lack of vandalism and peoples pride in their menial jobs. Excellent.

Some pros and a lot of cons compared to Australia.

Cheese:

Ive seen a few gaijin bums and was so shocked that I took a second look. One was an old white guy in Miyazaki about 4 years ago who was ravaging through a garbage can cursing up a storm looking for food. A mate of mine who use to live there said he tried killing himself by jumping off a bridge. Ive also seen a black woman in Osaka " title="" src="graemlins/cry.gif" /> Sad.

In addition to what others have said:

Konyoku

school trips to Oz

2 school ski trips

jizake

paid to study Japanese

the distinctive "Japanese" seasons confused.gif

matsuri

Japanese variety shows

no open-container laws

\:D
