Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras (which means Fat Tuesday in French). Its the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent.

Lent is the 40 day period leading up to Easter. During Lent, people 'fast', which is kind of like going on a diet. Traditionally you weren't supposed to eat things like meat, fat, eggs, and milk products. Thats why on the day before Lent, people would use up their supplies to make things like pancakes.

Also during Lent, people were supposed to give up parties and festivals. Thats why they would have a big party (sometimes called a carnival) to celebrate before they had to give up all the fun stuff for 40 days. This is where you get the idea of wild times at Mardi Gras and Carnivale.

Hey man, we eat pancakes, it's just that we have the "pancake parlour" instead of some crazy acronym like IHOP \:\)

Also, any pancake that uses self raising flour has really just missed the point... it's all about the thin pancakes with vanilla ice-cream, a small amount of maple syrup, and lotsa chunks of strawberries in there \:\)

I've never bought a pancake in a shop. Only ever eaten homemade ones. Nice with raspberry jam too. Buckwheat pancakes with maple syrup are wonderful, but that's probably too healthy for most folk here.
