Just saw a thing on tv about the increase in "domestic violence" (in katakana) or DV as it seems to be labelled now. Why do they use katakana for that? Is it something "new"? Is there a real Japanese word for it?

One could see it as a personal admission on the part of the Japanese that they failed to previously recognise it as a problem...

Domestic violence recognition and prevention, the latest import from the west... ;\)
