joshnii 2
In Niigata in the last month there has been a fairly big increase in the number of road accidents and deaths compared to a normal January - that sees much more snow. The opposite of what I would have thought, but it seems that people are just being less careful than they would normally be.
kaiser soce 0
Maybe because of more freeze thaw cycles. I know the roads were lethal in Hokkaido this January. I nearly became a statistic myself!
HeatherLocklearRocks 1
I don't get that. People becoming more confident because "winter is over" and the like they were saying on the tv. I drive according to the condition on the road, not what season it officially is or some other dumbarse reason like that.
bushpig 0
halfmachine might be on to something. If the roads are getting black ice on them, then they can still look fine (ie no snow on them so they look safe). But it's much easier to slip on that stuff than on a fully snowed-over road. snowboarding-sam 0
Sounds reasonable. The roads here in Shiga Kogen are white with packed snow on them at the moment. That's how I like to see it - not this 'heatwaves burning the concrete up' deal I saw the other weekend!
NoFakie 45
In Omachi cop shop, there's a map and chart showing fatal accidents on the roads through Hakuba with their dates. Surprisingly few were in winter. I see a car or truck in a field every winter though. If it happens to you, get towed out pronto or the owner will screw you over for polluting his field. Its big money.
charlotte 0
My friend this winter, first time driving in snow (though there wasn't that much) and he basically did a full 360 skid. Luckily it was a very wide road and there was no-one on the road.
hiiambang 0
My guess is that there are more drivers on the road due to less snow, therefor raising the number of accidents on the road.
Error404 0
Thats what the news piece said, hiiambang. Seems to be quite widespread rather than just one region.
