window-cleaner 0
I would lock mine up wherever I am, for peace of mind.
Archie2007 0
yeah that's what I am thinking, do most hire places give you locks?
window-cleaner 0
The times I have rented, no. You can probably get them though for extra.
bushpig 0
who would want/bother to steal a rental board??? You can buy a lock for less than 10 bucks though, so if you are worried about it then they are cheap enough.
Fattwins 0
or buy the insurance on the board
indosnm 0
Just buy a friggin lock! save all ya worries unless FT's insurance option is cheaper..
bushpig 0
mate it's 600 yen for a cheapo one that fits in yer pocket. But again, WHO would steal a rental??
grungy-gonads 54
Stick around they'll probably return them when they realise they are rentals
timcraig 0
Yeah locks are cheap. 1600 yen, even on the hill! Just buy one and don't worry. Having said that I should ake my own advice and get one too!!!
Archie2007 0
I think I will take the lock option...I have had a rental board stolen before, from the Chalet ski room in Austria!!! The ^&^&% Frau would not cough up the insurance money, forgot english all of a sudden. SO methinks for a few bucks the lock might save me some grief
journey_man 0
Everyone here is relaxed about security. I leave my skis all over the place. I haven't seen anyone with a lock yet. Cars are left running unlocked outside the shops... Long may it last.
Archie2007 0
Thats inspiring! Rare that you would get this these days
journey_man 0
I was totally stunned about how trusting people were when I arrived here. To start with I thought what a bunch of mugs, however I now really like it - if I catch someone stealing I'll do something about it. I really like the feeling that I can dump my 5 month old skis anywhere for hours and expect them to be there when I get back. It's how I think things should be and I'd like it to stay that way. It is such a contrast with living in London - leave something behind and it gets nicked within minutes.
joshnii 2
It's a good thing about Japan. Umbrellas get nicked though, keep your eye on that. Having said that there has been a definite increase in the number of robberies and burglaries in the area I am. Still low compared to other countries but a worrying trend all the same. Yuki's Passion 1
Regardless of the country, if you even have the slightest concern about your skis/board getting stolen, common sense would tell me to lock it up...especially when locks are only 1000+ yen and skis are 50,000+. Everyday Im on the slopes you hear of skis/boards being mistaken Right, like they just walk off on their own.
SirJibAlot 0
i alwasy lock regardless....it's peace of mind - once it's locked you can enjoy your lunch, tea break, pee break, whatever...
skidaisuki 0
Hate to say it, but Niseko these days is probably less safe than other resorts because of the large number of gaijin there who won't understand that people leaving something unlocked is not an open invitation to steal it. SnowArch - even in Tokyo, shops leave high value stock (bottles of whisky for example...) lying around outside on display on the pavement with no-one looking over them. When people ask why I live in this country, after the girls and the mountains, that point's a close third...

Like creek boy said lock = 1000 yen, skis = 50000 yen, its a no brainer really.

Archie2007 0
Yeah i have heard that Japan is very safe! But I think it's more foreigners that you have to worry about than the locals
skidaisuki 0
SnowArch - unfortunately you are correct. The biggest nuisance from Japanese is blowing cigarette smoke in your face
