Japan is a big place. You should try some info search first to at least get a vague idea of what you want:

hey reddevil

depends where you want to go... niseko is full of australians... i didnt enjoy that so i am trying hakuba this year so hopfully it wont be as bad... there are a few backpackers in hakuba around 3000yen/night... i know niseko is heavily booked also watch out for flights they can get pricey the longer you leave it... last year i booked a package through snowave and they were pretty good but this year i found accomodation on snowjapan and flights at a travel agent.... japan is an awsome place!!

It's not my first time in Japan and I'm never on a budget. But here goes anyway.

On the chairs in Niseko, the primary language I heard was Australian. Every Australian I spoke to said this was their first trip to Niseko. So there will be plenty more years of Australians visiting Niseko for further trips.

As One8s states, the above may not be everybody's cup of tea. So your alternative would be Nagano or Niiagata. And there are huge waste bins full of info about places to stay on these pages.
