pardon the inquiry, but...

ive been hearing and seeing on videos about "skiers/snowboarders choosing their line," and im a little confused about it...

most that i know of is that your line is "the path or route that you intend on following down," but i feel that there is more to that:

- why do we need to choose our line? cant skiing be more spontaneous?

- how do we choose our line? what are the guide points, best practices in choosing one's line?

- how can we say that this person, or that person's line is good?

if anyone can just point me in the right direction, ie., some URLs, some books or videos, etc.

thanks in advaned...!!!

-When you are looking down ar VERY steep slope containing trees, rocks, cliffs, or any number of assorted obstacles, sometimes its wise to take a minute out and figure out where you wanna go.

-you look at it from the bottom first, if you can and see what looks fun. Then you look from the top and see if your eyes are bigger than your balls.

You might want to consiter the snowpack, the speed coming out of your line, and where you will end up. Also consiter the worst case scenario, and prepare for it.

-If somebody looks at your line, and it looks gnarly, they will spark a bowl and say "yeah bra, that was siiiiiiiiiiick`.

lines pop out at me. everywhere. walking down the street, I will see lines off of rooves, over bridges, into shrubs and down fields. Lines are everywhere and I have come to the realization that that will never change. I'm going to be 87, staring at a staircase coming out of a downtown parking garage, dreaming of airing out to the parked station wagon, and stomping on it's windshield.

If you don't understand lines than look... imagine...

or rent some ski porn and get off your ass and start dreaming because skiing does tend to grow much larger than february's hobby.

Sorry... just frustrated with the high pressure moving over my mountains...

my hill had snow last week.

RAIN

anyway...

Not that I don't do the same thing, there's this sick natural road gap/step down by my school in central Tokyo, I always stand at the top dreamin it would snow more than half an inch thinkin "I can clear that"

Well, seeing as you extended the opportunity for us to individually pardon you:

No need to pardon the enquiry, it was a good one. But I don't feel like personally pardoning your lack of follow up or reply. You got serious answers, fun answers and combo fun-and-serious answers. Surely you could have found a hook in one of them for you to latch onto and offer up something of your own?

I guess your name says it all.

hi...

im sorry if i have offendended anyone - it wasnt my intention...

for one, i dont get to login to forums as much as i would want to

another is that i can barely relate to what was posted, and still trying to think things through... having started skiing only around feb/mar '06 - most of my experience are with groomed pistes, and thus never saw the rationale of planning a route. then, seeing and hearing talks about "choosing a line," i got curious and all and posted.

regardless, however, im very much thankful for everyone's reply... though, at the moment, i still cant really relate to what is being said, i do appreciate the tutorial (for lack of a better word)

You didn't offend. Stop being so soft. Just follow up if a crowd of people dish up some info in reply to your good question.

This would have been a fair response:

To which I would have asked, who the F picks their line on a groomed run, especially in Japan?

BTW, my telling you to get off your ass and watch some ski porn and start dreaming was completely sarcastic. I find it very strange that lines constantly pop out at me. i was poking fun at my own idiosyncracies, not giving you lip for not having them. You're the normal one, even on a ski forum. And, it's completely fine if you can't relate. In fact, I would suspect that the vast majority of humans don't relate.

You will find that when you hear pro's on dvd's talking about picking their line they are refering to riding backcountry or heli runs where there is no marked trail to follow so beforehand they have to 'pick their line' so they no where they are going and what obstacles are in their way.

If your a newbie riding resorts then your line has been picked for you in the form of a groomed marked trail.

So don't be confused, it is a term you don't need to worry about until you gain more experience and want to veer off the marked trails.

Because I'm Toque

And I'm not a nice person

I also skied powder all day today picking out at the bottom or on the chair each line I'd ski next. I have no idea why somebody would not understand the concept of choosing a line.

Choosing a line is not just a ski thing. If you think about you probably do it in your day to day life

"I have no idea why somebody would not understand the concept of choosing a line."

because toque they may have only started skiing recently and want to understand what we are talking about. and realize that perhaps the terms don't really work when cruising the beginner slope. and although it is in fact applicable to green slope cruising, "i will go down this side rather than that side and as such avoid the ice and scary looking convex role", it is as a matter of fact quite difficult for most beginners to think in these terms while also trying to stay up right. i found half the time in all my years of teaching i was not instructing people how to ski, but rather, where to ski.

and just for the record, YOU might be skiing fat pow all day long every day, but those of us here are sitting on the couch waiting for winter to happen. you don't have to be prick about it.

Haha

Good response Daver

I often find people are too nice on here so try to mix it up a bit

I hope to hell that you guys get the snow sooner than later or I'm not sure what will happen to the sanity of most powder hounds over there
