After reading again you just thought the gun bit was tasteless. Well that's America, we gots a thing called the constitution saying damn near everyone has the right to bare arms, or is that bear arms? Shit I don't know Anyways alot of people mess around with guns it's pretty common. I don't know anyone who doesn't have a few guns. Maybe it is geared towards American people, as you mention. I don't think many Americans know that other types of people are so against them.

As far as guns in the backcountry, that's really common. Every year there are people that get arrested even while hiking the AT!!! It's totally legal to have it, just not in National Parks. As far as skiiers holding, I don't know about that, but I was just reading an article at the bookstore that was in Skiing mag. I believe. That article talked about a guy snowboarding at Keystone, ducked a rope and got lost. When patrol finally found him 3 days later they found him only 200 M or so off piste and dude had a gun!!! Now that's kinda shocking.

M-Hucker, thanks for taking a second look at what I was on about. You got my thing: it was the gun.

I've seen a few of those clips and those socks can be amusing, with moments of crassness. Just this time it had surprise, one moment I am watching the socks talking boyish and some guys on the screen fooling around like most of us do. Then the next moment a guy is shooting a pistol. It was something I totally did not expect to see there and then. I guess its cultural conditioning... one nationality is different to the next. But for TGR to incude that footage really left me scratching my head.

Motherhucker, I've been refraining from my black-powder homemade bomb stories. cheers for that! You scratched a mustang, we just used to tie 'em to trees to see how large of a trunk we could uproot. then my friend made one out of a small bottle that originally held paint for model airplanes. Glass shrapnel in his hand changed our course. we stopped making bombs.

I can't believe you blew up a car garage wall. Good on ya... or not... my friend can still use his hand, but that was a quick wake-up call in junior high. eek.gif Most kids at aged 13 get caught with dad's dirty mags. Since Columbine, I've been afraid to admit that bombs were fun. Foolish- yes, but we laughed.

You win with the mustang. You blew up a garage wall. Was it funny? is it now? Am I out of line? (because my buddy and I laugh.) There's something grossly funny in admitting that something was terribly stupid, yet lacked foresight. Perhaps it's left-over adrenalin, some kind of venting session.

I can't believe I used to cut up shot-gun shells and make bombs.; especially since i had a shot gun on the wall, right there waiting to blow up whatever...

Yes, I'm terribly stupid. Or, was.

Yet, another friend super-glued his arms to his torso because he was intrigued at the behavior of super-glue. He was like six. That's still funny. clap.gif

with everyone going off on an environmental one recently, i honestly thought you were pissed about the tree kicking scene... regardless of the tree being dead, it was quite an aggressive way to treat the very nature and terrain we all love. i found that off-putting..... no wonder they don't put any of that shit in the movies they actually sell. then i re-read your post DB and realised you meant the last scene. the gun scene. or did you mean the one where they made fun of the hippy guy? personally i was really shocked when the guy held onto the rope and almost got dragged half way up a tree by a sled eek.gif the gun shit is un-called for and not very cool at all thumbsup.gif i still like TGR though

I still fail to see your point db. Americans allow themselves to have guns, for better or for worse. Seeing as the lads aren't hurting anyone with them, or not doing anything particularly harmful, what's the problem?

I think menacing strangers with fireworks is a worse thing to do, and I can understand why your friends would want you to stop.

Gentlemen hold your fire! Spud is a bit grumpy, if he uses the internet for more than 4 mins a day he starts getting electric shocks through his keyboard. lol.gif

I am probably an ol' fart, I am not into watching this kind of stuff but I can imagine how silly looking and immature it is. Yet I do not really care, hey, if they want to shove a fire-cracker up their a**, then go for it as long as you do not splatter anything on me.

You have to remember that a teenager's brain is not fully developped (we all used to do stupid things when we were kids \:D , that's part of growing up). TGR has at least been successful in generating attention to that trailer as per this thread.

As for guns, I can see Spud's point, but even if you disagree, there not much you can do. In the US for example the NRA is very powerful, and it is unlikely guns will ever be banned there. But that's another thread altogether.

spud, i haven't posted on this thread yet, so i don't know what you mean by referring to your original post in a congenitalous manner. granted i'm drunk and posting right now, it's been a long week.

in my drunken posting, i have to bringin up that fact that if you didn't like kids shooting firearms and playing with fire, SPUD LE DB, than you must have HATED HATED HATED the scene in First Descent when they were spitting flammable alcohol into the Alaskan bonfire. Ya, forget Shawn Farmer, he makes bonfires even bigger in the back country of alaska. what a seppo.

at any rate, as the tgr clip says, that video socked!

I don't own guns nor does anybody in my immediate family. I don't think I will ever own a gun. And I don't see the reason for owning a load of guns even if it is for self defense.

MSP - Ski Movie

Chris Davenport, Johnny Mosely have a shooting competition with a high powered rifle. First they shoot the hat off of Seth Morrison's head, then shoot Shane McKonkey off of a moving sled. They then together shoot Aaron McGovern who is skiing down a rige and then rag-dolls down the mountain. It was funny.

I know. Big contradiction

Sorry mate, reading back I see that I typed Dizzy instead of AK. Total mistake.

Just to be clear: all the camp-fire shenanigans and messing around with sleds etc was not what prompted me to post. It was the gun. One minute there was pole vaulting over the camp fire, the next shooting a pistol.

1. I never expected some real-deal pistol play to be part of a situation like that. To me, given my sheltered life, it was out of place. Perhaps if I knew that guns where so popular in the back country in the USA, like a bit if gear tucked away in your overnight pack, then I would have not been hit so hard by it. But if I was there and that happened, it would freak me out. I don’t understand it, I'll call it culture shock and won’t criticize the people. Most countries are very different.

2. But I was amazed that TGR movie producers and promoters would use that kind of footage. I totally don’t agree with it and it has put me off the TGR movie culture, not that I buy dvds anyway.

3. The Endless Summer surf movie had a random appearance of a big elephant gun in South Africa and the guys shot a water melon in whilst travelling. No one questioned that as it was in context given where they were and what they were doing and the story they were telling. And so I suppose to some people, a semi-auto pistol designed for shooting people is in the context of a back country ski trip in the USA, and to them, it wasn’t out of place and so caused no great surprise.

Ok, so I'm a knee-jerk weirdo for thinking like this. There's nothing new in that. I'm not out to offend anyone.

DB defense - THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO HAVE A 9MM PISTOL IN THE 'BACKCOUNTRY' AROUND MT BACHELOR, OREGON. In case you missed it, one of the socks said that's where they were.

I'm from the area, I should know.

Shooting a pressurized Coleman propane canister whilst in the campfire is just plain idiotic. I've done it, I know. I was 16 at the time however, and we were using a 30/30 and were at least 75 meters away behind a dirt bank. We ended up setting half of our camp on fire - the tent and two sleeping bags went up in flames thanks to embers and shrapnel being blown out by the blast.

Again, I was 16. What my friends and I had no impression on the unbelievably impressionable youth of today.

I sold my guns when I moved to Germany, but I used to own 3 of them in Alaska. 1 for bears (.44 Winchester Snub), one for squirrels (.22 LB pistol - squirrels eat wiring and steal insulation) and one for meth heads (9MM Glock). I hate the NRA with a passion. I don't hunt. Canada's gun laws surprise me. I believe in owning but being educated and proficient. NO MORE GUN SHOW EXCEPTIONS IN THE US! F*cking Charlton Heston....... and Toque is right - that was funny as hell in 'Ski Movie' \:D

Sounds like normal young bloke type behaviour to me. Im mean to say which one of us hasnt blown up his best friend with a poorly designed zinc dust and sulphur bomb?.......I know i have. How many of us hasnt thrown a 20 litre jerrycan of petrol and a handfull of .22 magnum rounds on the campfire at a bucks party? I know I have and who amongst us hasnt set fire to a public building as a child and had the police visit their home I know I have.

Fortunately all involved survived these and other mind bogglingly stupid pranks, eventually grew a brain and learned the meaning of the words intensive care, "analgesia PR please nurse" and responsibility, .

Plucky

Its so nice to hear a balanced argument from an american gun owner. No Im not being funny, Im a gun owner a hunter here in Oz who hates the "gun culture" too.

They are tools not expressions of our manhood and we dont have a "right" to own and bear arms it is a privilege that if we abuse should be withdrawn.

Furthermore if guns where portrayed as tools just like spanners and hammers perhaps fewer youth would aspire to shooting someone.

So I do agree that the irresponsible portrayal of gun use/abuse is detrimental.

That goes triple for Hollywood.

LMAO!!!

Honestly, the worst thing I ever did was throw two cans of Nally's chilly in to a camp fire. One of my mates had to go get stitches the next day.

It wasn't on film, however.

The above is a benign story.....I have hundreds. I'd love to share stories some day in some big mass of SnowJapense peeps....

For me the gun just capped it off (pardon the pun). I think what shocked me is the total lack of respect for the enviroment they're in. I was always taught to leave as little trace as possible when you're in the mountains. Maybe it's a cultural thing. In the UK our 'wilderness' is a lot less wild and lot more likely to be trampled over by humans. One of the reasons bc films are so extreme is they (the boarders & skiers) are in places only accessable by heli or hiking. They are beautiful and remote areas and what do these guys do; they turn the forest into a squatters camp. I've done stupid stuff as a kid; friends blowing holes in their faces with pipe bombs, setting ourselves alight with buckets full of petrol (we were very lucky)etc etc but I would never have done anything like that out on trips to the mountains.

I see DB's point; to agree or disagree with their behaviour is beside the point, it's that TGR are using this footage for their benefit. I think it's something to ponder; isn't it worrying that you wouldn't get freaked if someone pulled a semi automatic pistol (actually anything with a freakin trigger!) out of their pack.

Most of my American friends in Japan have never owned guns in the U.S. and are vocally against current American gun laws. As they point out, the 'right to bear arms' thing was written when democracy and government was young and unstable and the country was unsettled. Gun laws are long outdated but the NRA and conservative idiology is still firmly rooted. There's also a sharp cultural distinction between Americans in relatively urban areas on the east coast and California, and those in the country. In rural areas guns are somewhat necessary and the culture persists. Most of my U.S. friends come from the East coast. Maybe a lot of 'civilized' Europeans (sorry, I can't call Aussies 'civilized' ;\) ) cynically look down on Americans, imagining skiers packing pistles and shooting them off on the lift. Canadians are (unfortunately) the biggest American bashers of all but that's just fiction. (Though I don't know exactly what goes on in the west. Most of my U.S. ski experience is in peace-loving, hippy-friendly Vermont.) Anyways, as a reformed American-bashing Canadian nationalist, I feel like I should come to the defence of my American friends. Hello, Americans! wave.gif God Bless America! shifty.gif ;\)

Totally agree with you man. I've lived in places where guns are actually necessary. It's either for wildlife protection or for gathering food. I am all for tougher regulations on guns in the states. Too many trigger-hapy, tinfoil wearing dummsheists that have easy access to weapons. It's not right. If you 'need' a gun, prove it. It's not a recreational toy. Did I mention I HATE the NRA? \:\)

"I was always taught to leave as little trace as possible when you're in the mountains"

Amen. I live like this in the city too. Unfortunately, only .5% of the other people subscribe to my beliefs. I don't think I like city living that much......

I wouldn't pay money to watch a flim promoted with such antics. I disliked it immensley.

Okay, here's a story. I was on a field trip with a bunch of new grad students. I was one of the teaching assistants. We were traveling around Oregon seeing the geological sites. We did a stop on the Deschutes River around the Mt Bachelor area. The fire danger was in the extreme category. We were required to cook in designated areas. Some jackass on the trip got drunk and started a small campfire so he could roast marshmallows. Two days later I pick up a paper in French Glenn, Oregon and read that a 500 acre fire was threatening the community of Sun River. 'Our' boy started that. It cost my department 150k. I hate idiots who have no concept of what their disregard might do to others. hate them.

People today just have no regard for others or their actions. I actively call that stuff out and make people feel ashamed and stupid. I realize I have my own problems, but I don't drape them on society in general. Last night I got a traffic ticket for flipping off some dipshit who hit my car. Left turn signal was on, pulling in to my garage, the guy T-boned me. Crumpled his car all up but I only sustained a scratch to the Jeep (love my steel jeep). I flipped him off and a meter maid saw it. I got the ticket. If it weren't for the law about berating traffic officials in Germany, I would have thrown the lady through the jewlery store window. I was so upset but had to take it. God damn commie socialists :p
