SJ PHOTO CONTEST 05/06 - And the winners are...

We have been very pleased with the popularity of the SJ Photos section since it went online late last year - over 3500 pics uploaded in one season is pretty good going.... a big thank you to everyone who has used the section. Hopefully over time it will grow into an ever increasingly valuable resource for anyone interested in Japan winter sports as well of course as a good place to keep your snowy pics online.

CDs of all the photos were prepared for each of the judges (4 SJ-related people and 2 Japanese ski colleagues). We then all met up recently to discuss our favorites and decide on the winners. There were so many great pics to choose from and the judge panel had some heated discussions on which photos should win. There were disagreements. Some of the photos were really good, but small and a low resolution and so the bigger ones proved to be more generally popular.

It is probably worth mentioning that when looking over all the photos, we viewed them without the username displayed and so we did not know whose photo each one was.

It was really hard to choose the winners, but we had to. Sorry if we dont mention your pics. Anyway, here they are.

BEST SCENERY WINNER - alferg

BEST ACTION WINNER - marnix

BEST SET OF PHOTOS WINNER - eskimobasecamp

BEST CRAZY PHOTO WINNER - Bushpig

SPECIAL MENTION - toque

We will be contacting the winners by email later today. If you are one of the winners and do not get our mail by the end of today, contact us!

BEST SCENERY WINNER - alferg

So many fantastic scenery shots, but these large photos posted by alferg (from Hakkoda) proved very popular with the judges. Here's 3 with a link to his gallery for more:

BEST CRAZY PHOTO WINNER - Bushpig

There was some discussion as to what "crazy" meant. On reflection, perhaps it wasn't the best word for a prize category. But this photo from Bushpig got the votes. I think it is the expression that does it....

SPECIAL MENTION - toque

http://www.snowjapan.com/e/insider/photo.php?userid=toque

For posting and sharing over 300 photos of his adventures on the snow, he deserves a prize - and we'll give him one - even if he can't use it himself! But we're sure he has lots of good friends ;\)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

We have learnt a lot from the process of looking at all the photos that had been uploaded, and plan to change things around a bit and have a more comprehensive Photo Contest up and running in time for the beginning of next season, so look forward to that and the other things we have in store. ;\)

Thanks again to everyone.

Congrats to the winners thumbsup.gif

otsukaresama to the judges. you must have had a hard time going through every picture posted this year.

FT I like a different one of you better. Toque took it. let me find it.

The winning action shot captures the moment well, but is noticably underexposed. If marnix is reading this, it looks like your camera is set on a minus compensation, because a number of your other pix are the same. Try changing it for better results. Change the iso up if you want a fast shutter, though you won't need one on a bluebird like that. With a proper exposure, you'd get a blue sky and far more detail on the skier. You should only have to compensate when shooting directly into the sun.

The top pic of Hakkoda is very nice. Nice also to see a crazy one that doesn't involve people getting pissed!

finally starting to see some progress! Just a matter of stretching it out some more and then rebuilding the muscles. It turned out that I got too gungho hiking at the end of an aggressive season and the muscles and ligaments above the knee fatigues and gave up kind of. They went really tight and started pulling the kneecap out of place.
I am still so hooked on snow. Normally I'm not even thinking about it in the summer but this year I'm still all over it. I am soooo looking forward to next year!

Wooooooo hooooooo clap.gif clap.gif

thank you very much for voting my pictures! i have to say that something i enjoy very much is taking pictures. i've spent a bit of time in europe taking a lot of architectural shots, and here in japan i have a huge snow collection - i suppose i can't be doing too bad if they win here! for me the pictures i put up in my member's page represent everything, a mixture of people, action, scenic. anyway, thank you it's really nice that someone liked them!

What could I have done to make it better?
Is it just the editing process or am I doing something wrong while taking the picture?

i think you took a great point & shoot picture Toque. Like FT said, pros take longer to set up to get the perfect shot.

Some 'imperfections' about your shot would be:

-there's tracks

-the cliff on the right gives nice perspective, but you've got the trees on the left too. Maybe choose one or the other.

-here's a big one: the rule of thirds. FT is in the middle of the picture. If he was in one of the intersecting points the picture would draw your eye in more. One example is the one you took of me summitting at norikura. You have me in the bottom third on the left. That is a money shot!

but this is just nitpicking. you don't need pro photos, nor do I think you'd want to take the time to take them. Best thing to do is to convince someone to take them of you ;\)
