JellyBelly 1
Five dead after heavy snow in northwestern Japan Heavy snow hit parts of northwestern Japan on Wednesday, killing five men and disrupting traffic, officials said. The men died while clearing snow in separate incidents across three prefectures, according to local police. In Fukui, the worst-hit region, a man was killed after falling off the roof of his house into a reservoir, said prefectural police official Tadahito Ito. He said at least eight others were injured in snow-related accidents in Fukui, which saw over 160 centimeters of snowfall in the 24 hours up to late Wednesday, according to the Meteorological Agency. The heavy snow would continue through Thursday along Japan's northwestern coast, the agency warned. Snow also caused widespread traffic disruptions. Almost 100 trees were pushed by snow onto rail tracks in Fukui, leading to cancellations on local train services throughout the day, Ito said. (AP)
