MIlefire 0
Hi - newbie here. I'm heading to Japan for a week mid January, and I have a JR Railpass. I want to spend a couple of days snowboarding while I'm there but I'm having trouble working out what is the closest resort/mountain to Tokyo. Can anyone advise me which is the best/closest/easiest to get to by train/ resort to Tokyo? Thank you in advance!
Fattwins 0
are you doing day trips or are you going to stay there
MIlefire 0
Sorry - should have specified. Just day trips.
big-will 7
Yuzawa is probably the easiest - the shink from Tokyo to Yuzawa in 80 mins or so. JR cheap deals at the stations This place, got lots of snow http://www.snowjapan.com/e/daily/yuzawa-now.php
sunrise 0
The easiest/closest is probably Kuriazawa, but I wouldn't recommend it. There are other places that take a little longer but would be far far far better.
SydFunnelWeb 0
Gala yuzawa has a bullet train station as part of the resort and about 1.5 hours by train from tokyo.Really easy
SydFunnelWeb 0
Sorry ,should have mentioned but you can get tickets that let you ski at the resort next to it too.
merryJim 1
That resort being Ishiuchi Maruyama. There is also a link to Yuzawa Kogen on the other end. The links are not yet open though.
merryJim 1
In fact they put up a photo of the shinkansen/gondola the other day There's more photos of the place in the Yuzawa Now page.
krotch 0
Yuzawa looks pretty decent. When does it start getting packed? I talked with someone who said he'd never go back there, due to the overcrowding. I wouldn't mind hitting it up, before peak.
DumbStick 13
Quote: due to the overcrowding When did they say that.... 1990?! If you go weekdays there's hardly a crowd to be seen at most places up there.
cpnhowdy 0
Anyone notice the JR Byuu Day Trip plans are more expensive this year? or is it just me?? Iwappara is 10,300 yen for shink and lift ticket compared to Ishiuchi for 8,200. I dont remember paying more than 10,000 yen for any day trips last year... maybe too many hits on the head... kutsurogi 0
Still cheap tho
number9 0
Haven't experienced it first hand, but I hear popular places like Gala and Naeba can get quite crowded on weekends during the high season. JR Byuu is more expensive than the bus packages, but there are some reasonable Shinkansen packages where you only have a choice of 2 or 3 train times.
echineko 1
They can get busy but not like many years ago with crazy busy. Of course weekday is best if possible.
