Make sure ski passes are anyway no refund once when you start using one. So if you get a 3 day pass, it's no refund even if you got injured at the first day. You'd better not pay attention so much on the 'cheaper way' part if you don't mind me advicing.

And it's a busiest time if it's around new year's day so you can't save so much.

 

Try some ski/snowboard equipment shops or combini they might have some vouchers for ski passes like 4700 yen for a 1 day pass plus lunch equivalent for 1000 yen. Still around new year's day might be 'exceptions' though.

new years not the best time to go! 2nd week in january is the best. Go to the resorts home page directly you can book packages that include room 2 meals & lift ticket & sometimes even a lunch coupon. for around 7,000 to 9,000 yen a day you cant piece meal it cheaper yourself.
