SerreChe 2
OK enlighted forum members, what are the big powder boards out there this season? Thinking about it and would not mind getting some suggestions. Around 185 cm n wide would be nice!
SerreChe 2
I'll start. Looks like the K2 Ambush is 174cm. Not bad

montoya 0
serreche, here's some misc info about longboards ..in English http://www.couloirmag.com/gear/snowboard/longboards.htm and in French http://www.objectiveride.com/lemag22_104.htm why don't you like swallowtails?
SerreChe 2
Thanks Montoya. Will check it out. The swallowtails have been around for a while. I think it makes powder turns easier but you loose some traction/portance in the back. I guess I could try again...
SerreChe 2
that's true Montoya, would suck not being able to get in the gondola ... Some makers have 200s. The links you gave are great, thanks.
Oyuki kigan 0
Why do you need a long board for the pow? What about something shorter like a Fish or Kyber, that will float without the extra 30 cm?
montoya 0
the extra length helps provide extra float for the extra weight of your backpack.
Oyuki kigan 0
What king of stuff are you packing?!? I`ve ridden my normal 159 freestyle boards in pow with packs on (not that heavy, just extra clothes and some food)
montoya 0
depending on the location: shovel, ski poles, probe, stove, food, water, skins, camera, clothes, thermos, first-aid-kit, emergency tarp there's a good thead here for more http://www.splitboard.net/talk/viewtopic.php?t=1150
tsondaboy 0
How dangerous is it if you fall on your back wile snowboarding, when you have a backpack full of staff? Do you know anyone that had hurt his back because of the backpack?
montoya 0
hmm, dunno. first guesss is it would help break the fall.
tsondaboy 0
How about falling on the shovel or snowsues and brake your spine?
montoya 0
I put the softer, more pliable things (skins, clothing, platypus water reservoir, etc) on the side closest to my back, so there is some padding. the shovel and snowshoes go on the outside pockets. you know, I have heard of regular resort riders who put can-kohi in their front jacket pockets, later fall forward while boarding and end up cracking their ribs. ouch.. tsondaboy 0
Yap, I know what you mean. I was stupid enough to do the same with my wallet. I lost my breath after the fall, and I was hurting even when I was breathing for the next 2-3 weeks. Ouch!!!! So basically that’s why I was asking about falling on your backpack. montoya 0
if you've selected a good backpack and have loaded it right, there should enough of a cushion to protect your back. I think there was a thread here last year about good packs, try searching for it. I use an Osprey Switch 25+5, like it alot.
tsondaboy 0
Thank montoya, I found the thread.

tsondaboy 0
I would like to check the Kagura area. It depends though were my friends are planing to go. I will let you guys know if I am heading there.
SerreChe 2
Oyuki Kigan, without a pack I am already 100 Kgs, so the extra 30cm are always welcome.
peaker 0
why dont you like swallow tails? Only way to go in big pow In my opinion
SerreChe 2
Swallow tails help you to turn in powder by angling your board up slightly. Turning in powder has never been a problem for me and I would rather get the extra float that a regular shaped board gives. I guess it might be less of an issue for a lighter rider.
