Yes - they don't seem to use too much salt over here in Japan. Anybody know why? I just got a used Subara AWD wagon and looking forward to seeing how it performs in the snow. Looks like it is going to be sick up in Hakuba this weekend. Wish I was going to be there.

TeleSkier, I wouldn't have any great expectations of your Subaru 4WD. That's what I have - an Impreza. While it's better at getting going on ice than my previous 2WD Isuzu, once you're going, you WILL lose control on ice just as readily as a 2WD. I found this out through some controlled tests that soon ended up uncontrolled.

On thick snow or slush the 4WD is good to have though and provides more control.

So I recommend as much caution as usual. Happy driving!

I had a '91 Subaru wagon with switchable 4WD. It took to the snow like a baby takes to the nip. I bought a 98 Legacy GT AWD wagon this summer and just got to try it out in the snow when I was home last week. Fantastic! Those things drive in the snow like a dry road. I can't imagine a better car for cruisin up to the mountain.

I like to slide. Unfortunately, I don't get to much in this car.

Chains? pssshaw. Never bothered with that on a 4WD/AWD car. New tires, but just standard All Weather. No studs. I'm sure ice is different, but it is still better with AWD. But as for snow...I can't even tell it is there.

That is some heavy weather going on in Hakkers there! This weekend should be an orgasmic curtain raiser for those bastards who are going there this weekend.

I hope ... I hope ... I hope you all get food poisoning!! mad.gif

I didn't have fun. We arrived to find near perfect blue sky and below freezing temps with no wind. Not a good start. Having gone directly to the summit we came across a run that had hardly been ridden and was coated with the 100cm+ of powder that had fallen the previous 24 hours. I was hoping for a miracle, but sadly it stayed the same for the entire day.

Yep, I would rather drink acid that have another day like that.
