With all the posts about ducking the ropes and hitting the great powder, I've got to ask the stupid question.

Do they clip lift tix here aggressively if you ski out of bounds? Specifically, i'm heading out to Niseko-Hirafu but would be interested in how it is generally.

(and if not, do people here know what they're doing when it comes to avalanche control??)

I'm interested to know what they would do if you refused to deal with them - like 'No, I won't take my helmet off, no, I won't speak to you, and no, you can't touch my ticket'. Anybody got any experience of this sort of thing?

I have a friend that used to work at a resort in japan (forget where)...she said

if you get caught out of bounds by patrol, they will just yell at you...you know

like "bad boy...don't do it again", but that's it...you can still ski...

throw in some "gaijin power" and I don't think there is anything to worry about...

on a related story...i've seen US ski patrolers to some really nasty shit...this

guy ducked some ropes to enter a huge bowl...

patrol watched him ski down, caught up to him at the bottom, yanked his pass, and then made him hike back to where he entered...harsh....

A friend of mine was asked to give his ticket over at Tsugaike when he was physically wrestled to a stop by 2 ski-patrollers (I had high tailed it down). He just stood his ground refused to give his name, give his ticket, speak any Japanese, or go to the bottom lodge with them. In the end they gave up and just shouted at him and then followed him for about 20 mins.

I know that Mitch from snowbeds lost his season pass at 47 last season (I think it was on one of the first days he used it). Unfortunately for him, the patrol there recognised him and checked his name on their file...

My experience an Niseko is that officially they care, but really they don't. I've come out from the OB area onto the groomed right infront of lifties/patrol there and they've never said anything.

I'm planning on getting a Goryu/47 season pass this year and was thinking of getting someone's finished "point" ticket (one of those where each lift you use deducts some points off your total bought) to hand over if caught. Will still have to be careful though...

  • 5 weeks later...

I think this is gonna depend on the resort and how strict they are dont you reckon.

My mate was "told off" at GALA last month, about 4 patrol ganged up on him and escorted him down to the course. Didn't take the ticket off him, but they were quite insistent.
