Wada Toge has got just one lift. Most days there are maybe 10 riders in all on the 3 official slopes and 1 unofficial slope, if that.

On the couple of long weekends, though, the place is packed with Kanto sophisticates who flock from all around Tokyo to every scrap of snow in Nagano with a chairlift. There's no room to park our big cars sideways as we're accustomed.

Wada is called 'kokuritsu' so I guess that means they may be subsidized. That may also explain why they're trying to grow trees under the chairlift and on their best run.

Lots of them don't need much staff at all - just farmer types (great people!) - and not much upkeep. Just keep the lift chugging. So they don't cost that much to run.

Do they????

There's quite a few of them around and I often wonder how they can keep going. There never seem to be more than a handful of people going there. They musn't need the cash.

Ii, neeee...
