SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 180 Posted May 5 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted May 5 End-of-season message from SnowJapan 6th May 2025 The following general message will be posted on each of our regional daily 'Now' reports, but is not specific to any region of Japan. Another snow season has ended (a few exceptions aside). Our first reports of the 2024-2025 season appeared in early November 2024, now six months ago. How time flies when you are having fun! (And being extremely busy). We hope that you found our reporting to be informative and interesting. A very big thank you to the good people posting the reports every day. And, of course, we hope you enjoyed the slopes and had lots of fine experiences. As is always the case with the Japanese mountains spread across such a wide area, snowfall during the 2024-2025 season varied regionally. It's too complicated to sum it all up in simple soundbites adequately. But overall, many regions of Japan seemed to enjoy good snowfall this season, with some getting a few bouts of good old 'crazy snow' when it never seems to stop. Those periods can be a challenge for locals and ski areas, having to cope with it all, but they are still very exciting. Due to more snow than usual, some ski areas had enough to extend their seasons beyond their originally planned closing dates, while most were just happy to be able to complete seasons as per the original plan. At the end of last season (2023-2024), we summarised it as being 'a strange one and far from being a classic' with quite a few ski areas struggling at times with snow. In that respect, 2024-2025 was definitely an improvement. Some regions did not receive as much snow as they usually expect. Fortunately, while that might have been disappointing to those visiting at times, even those regions had enough for it not to be a significant problem. The number of skiers and snowboarders visiting from overseas increased once again, and in some places apparently quite dramatically. Surprised and perhaps not fully prepared for how many non-Japanese speaking people turned up, there have been some coping struggles. And once again, even more than last season, various issues related to the 'inbound market' got much attention in various Japanese media. (Unfortunately, not all of it was positive). Hopefully, some lessons have been learnt, and more destinations will be more prepared in time for next season. The increase in interest in Japan isn't likely to wane any time soon. The trend of more people becoming interested in as yet less well-known destinations (ski areas) continues. We can clearly see that in the increase in usage and what information people are looking at within SnowJapan. The actual confirmed opening and closing dates for ski areas around Japan can now be found on (most of) the individual listings within the site. In the coming weeks, we will fill in the remaining data and then add a new interactive chart for the season so that they can be compared. Our daily reports may be finished for now, but SnowJapan is updated throughout the year. It won't be long before we start checking and updating ski area details for the 2025-2026 winter season and the whole cycle begins once again!
