Looking beyond Hokkaido... (towards Nagano)

Question

We have visited Hokkaido the last two winters. Totally love it. But next year we are planning on spreading our wings a little and checking out somewhere new.

We like the look of Shiga Kogen / Nozawa region of Nagano Prefecture.

Anyone who has been to both regions, any words of wisdom for us?

Hi PeatGround

Shiga Kogen / Nozawa is most definitely a different feel to Hokkaido.

One of the great things about that area is that not only do you have the large Shiga Kogen area as well as Nozawa, but there's also places like Ryuoo, Madarao and even Myoko within reach. Tons of choice that can keep you occupied for a long time.

How long do you plan on being in the area?

PeatGround

Welcome. Let us know what you loved about Hokkaido and bits you maybe didn't. That will help!

I'm sure you'll love Nagano, it's a great region.

We preferred Nagano on the whole. There was more to choose from in a more compact space as well.

Nozawa-Shiga Kogen-Madarao-Myoko is great.

Then you have Nagano city and we liked Obuse too.

We did the same thing last year - Have always skied Niseko so did a trip to Hakuba last year (then back to Niseko this year). Hakuba is a lot more authentic ie. not as commercial. Kind of like Niseko 15 years ago. It is cheaper to eat there but not as well run as Niseko with the buses etc. In Niseko the shuttles run every 15mins, in Hakuba it is every hour.

We really enjoyed Hakuba and are going to be spending the season there this coming year. We did however go back to Niseko this year with the 3 x 20-something year old 'kids' as Niseko had a better nightlife for those young 'uns :)
