pie-eater 207
OK so I can see that they may be useful when there's a choice, but in the WHSmiths at Manchester Airport for example, there are now absolutely NO tills and you have no choice but to fanny about with the self-service machines. And of course, it seems that the majority of people have at least one issue with them and don't know what to do. And of course, one was broken. It was funny, there were 2 ladies there jumping from one person to the next answering the same questions while frustrated airport users continued faffing about with the machines... the ladies were in a bad mood as well actually and obviously fed up with the same old questions. And it was only 9:30am. (Previously the very possibly same two ladies were on the counter doing it the old fashioned way). But seriously...
scouser 4
I noticed that too. There was a big queue, I decided to give that last sandwich and magazine a miss. Hate those things.
Tubby Beaver 209
Yeah its the same in ASDA and TESCO.....wound me up no end!
NoFakie 45
We had one go at one and that was enough. Aldi and Lidl don't have them, so maybe the bean counters got this one wrong.
RobBright 35
There's some at my local Seiyu and they wind me up no ****ing end. I mean, the store uses some special labels for discounted goods, so you have to call some people over to put through the various discounted goods through.
LiquidX 0
What is the point when they need people to be overlooking them and helping people. Might as well just have '10 items or less' tills.
Tubby Beaver 209
They only need to pay 1 member of staff to cover 5 or 6 tills
pie-eater 207
Well, at Manchester Airport WHSmiths, there were 2 ladies there previously on the tills last year - now, there are two ladies just going round the self-service machines helping frustrated people. Makes it even worse when it asks for your boarding card. While I was there about half the people didn't have it with them, and so the assistants had to do some scan thing to approve the order. All very silly it seemed.
Tubby Beaver 209
Also in supermarkets, if u buy bevvy, a shop worker needs to scan their card to authorise ur over 18......PITA when they are busy faffing around another machine
pie-eater 207
Would be interesting to see how it all works out in general. I suppose they must be overall beneficial for them to keep on appearing. I'd prefer friendly robots myself.

big-will 7
Yeah those things are annoying. Thankfully, I haven't seen any in Japan.
SKI 15
Wonder how much "nicking stuff" goes on related to these. Suppose they have cameras checking everything that's being done. But that'll need people to check won't it?
BagOfCrisps 24
Our local supermarket has actually taken the self-service tills out recently. Gone back to having a 10 items of less till. A good move I think.@
Metabo Oyaji 71
Yeah those things are annoying. Thankfully, I haven't seen any in Japan. I've seen them in Japan, at a drugstore. Annoying, indeed.

muikabochi 208
It seems a bit not-Japanese to me, liking service and all. Then again, I suppose the self-service petrol stations do well. Though they are cheaper aren't they.
NoFakie 45
There's no shortage of vending machines in Japan, so maybe the idea of service doesn't apply to Fanta grape and Boss coffee.
