If planning a 2 week 2 resort holiday in Hokkaido, Niseko for 1 week, where would be recommended for the 2nd week? (snowboarding, good snow record, minimal crowds, varied steep-ish terrain)

Solo? Do you drive? Need nightlife? Expert/beginner/somewhere in-between? Own gear or renting? Want `Japan' or just `powder' or both? Backcountry experienced or resort only?

Group of 3

Yes we drive but would prefer to avoid the expense of car hire if possible

Nightlife preferred but not essential

Expert (we like to think...)

Own gear

Powder and minimal crowds are the priorities

Yes backcountry

Cheers

Easy answer then: check Places to Stay/Niseko on the main page. You don't need to rent a car for entire trip, but can for day trips to Rusutsu & Kiroro, maybe even Kokusai. As Seemore points out, there's more than enough to keep you busy, don't bother overthinking it, just go and have a great time.

We always do Furano & Niseko. Furano Base to Asahidake - Kamui - Tomamu - Sahoro

If you get a bad weather day in Furano you have got Asahikawa for Shopping and Asahikawa Zoo.

We consider the day of travelling between resorts a great sightseeing day.

Exactly. Rusutsu would be my second pick. Kokusai and Kiroro third and fourth

+1 to snowhuntress' suggestion.

Or for something completely different,

Week 1 based in the Niseko Resort Area riding Niseko United, Niseko Moiwa and Rusutsu.

Week 2 based in Otaru riding Kiroro, Sapporo Kokusai, Asari, Otaru Tenguyama and Sapporo Teine.

Would a car be required for week 2?

If you don't have a car, I'd base yourself in Sapporo......it'd be much easier from sapporo IMO.

(plus Otaru's a boring shithole)

We always hire a car. Maybe you could hire the car in NIseko at the end of the week for your 2nd week option.

Thanks for all the replies. We are edging towards the option of staying in Niseko and doing day trips to Rusutsu and Kiroro. I see that it is possible to buy a 11 out of 13 or 12 out of 14 day pass for Niesko United which would facilitate this.

How frequent are buses between Niseko and Rusutsu+Kiroro?

From where in Niseko do they depart?
