a bit thick 0
Hey, I see there is a route over from Yuzawa to Nozawa. Is it open in winter? Cheers
muikabochi 208
Yes the roads are open. From Yuzawa, you'll get Route 17 north into Minamiuonuma, turn onto Route 353 at Ishiuchi; then turn left onto Route 117 towards Nagano. It's about 60km and on a good clear day can be done in just over an hour or so.
a bit thick 0
Thanks for that muikabochi.
gozaimaas 61
I drove it in dumping snow, took a long time ;-)
muikabochi 208
Oh, I never drive / ski when it's dumping snow. Sounds silly to me. What I said was the least time it would take given great conditions and lack of slow trucks and ojisans.
gozaimaas 61
Yeah it was silly I must admit. Pretty sure I followed the ojisan 2wd kei car convention
manfredk 2
Is there public transport from Nozawa to Yuzawa? Translate a ojisan, I can have a guess
muikabochi 208
No. (I don't think so at least, highly doubt it). You'd need to get the train from Echigo Yuzawa via Muikamachi over to Tokamachi (just 1 train if you do the Hokuhoku line), and then over to Togari Nozawa Onsen on the Iiyama line. Bit of a round route, but no driving involved.
pie-eater 207
Is that road still closed? It was on the news an avalanche or some landslide on there a few weeks back I recall.
muikabochi 208
Sorry missed this... yes it is still closed. Has been for a few weeks now.
tokabochi 9
This is the problem, landslide Let's map http://www.city.toka...e/000034860.pdf
pie-eater 207
Lucky no-one got hurt or worse there by the looks.
SKI 15
What triggered that off then?
tokabochi 9
I don't actually know. They still don't seem to be giving us an expected re-open date. That'll be a real inconvenients to people going between Yuzawa area and Tsunan. There's a fair few as well.
Wizz 11
Lots of people commute from the Tsunan area to Yuzawa? I suppose it's not that far.
muikabochi 208
Quite a few people do. It's only 30 minutes or so really. I think people as far west as Nozawa come over to Yuzawa to get the shink down to Tokyo as well. I suppose that will be changing when the Iiyama Station opens next year. u-tan 2
Does anyone have any idea how long it will take from Tokyo to Iiyama station on the new Hokuriku Shinkansen? I bet the resorts will be running shuttle buses from there too. Could it make Nozawa a doable day trip option like the Yuzawa area resorts?
Tubby Beaver 209
When does that open?
igloo 3
Tokyo to Nagano is around 1 hour 40 minutes isn't it. So I would guess around 2 hours.
muikabochi 208
...and a 20-30 minute or so ride from the station to Nozawa. Not quite the convenience of Yuzawa but definitely making the area quicker to get to.

I can't answer your question, but as things stand, discounted day trips between Nagano City and Tokyo on the Shink cost a minimum of 8,000 yen return. Iiyama is further and you'll need a lift ticket and shuttling too, so maybe cost will be the problem, not time.
Agent Smith 1
A very good point!
muikabochi 208
There's that too isn't there. Wonder how the shuttle thing will work out. It'll be 15/16 season before that starts though, lots of thinking time.
