Apparently, beer is good for you.

 

1. Improve your skin

‘Beer Spas’ have been popping up in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic, where guests are invited to bathe in dark lager. “Beer is very good for the skin, because of the vitamins and the yeast,” the owner of one such spa told The New York Times.“It’s cleansing and drying.”

The spas also offer beer-based facials, made from ground hops, malt, honey and cream cheese.

 

2. Relax your feet

If you can’t afford to go full lager-Cleopatra, resting your feet in a large bowl of beer has also been recommended as a way to soothe them. Advantages: it’s cold and carbonated. Disadvantages: potentially sticky.

 

3. Reduce your risk of kidney stones

A 1998 Finnish study found that men reduced their risk of developing kidney stones by 40 per cent with one bottle of beer a day. Researchers suggested the hops in the beer strengthened calcium in the bones, preventing it from developing as stones in the kidneys.

 

4. Massage yourself

Massage therapists suggest rolling a can of beer underfoot, or placing one between your shoulder blades, leaning against a wall and rolling it from side-to-side. “The pressure loosens up muscle tissue and encourages blood flow to the area,” one claims. Teetotalers could try the same thing with a can of Fanta.

 

5. Improve your sight

A lager or stout a day can stop cataracts from forming, according to research by Canadian scientists, because of antioxidants in the drink. But three or more beers a day were found to have the opposite effect.

 

6. Improve your confidence

And finally, even drinking non-alcoholic beer has been found to improve your confidence. In one study, researchers told some participants they would be drinking alcoholic beer, but gave half of them a non-alcoholic drink, while others had nothing to drink at all. Participants who were told they had drunk beer consistently rated themselves as funnier, smarter and better-looking during their talk - whether they had had the alcoholic version or not.

Went to the North Island Brewery bar in Sapporo last night.....been meaning to go for a while....had a fantastic stout, an oishiiiii IPA and a delicious brown ale. Good thing is that prices for the jibiru aren't silly Billy prices, 650¥ for a regular glass which is just shy of a pint but a bit more than the usual Japanese sized beer. Most interesting was a taste of a Garlic Stout that they had from a brewery in Aomori.....wouldn't quite say it was fantastic, it wasn't bad.....interesting

The "mugi and hop" black happoshu is pretty good. A little watery but that's better than the weird bitterness you get with many black Japanese beers. The amber in the same series wasn't bad either.

 

For happoshu price, best value is still Spitfire etc. at Seiyu at 189 yen for 500ml.

I've not tasted a really good happoshu yet.

Is there a difference between happoshu and 'dai-san beer'?

Since 2004, Japanese breweries have produced even lower taxed, non-malt brews made from soybeans and other ingredients which do not fit the classifications for beer or happoshu. Dubbed the third beer or third-category beers or Happousei (発泡性, literally type of Happou; this is what is usually written on the can, either this or "Liqueur" (リキュール) Incidentally, liqueur also refers to what we would commonly think of as a liqueur as well as the Chuhai drink) by the Japanese media (dai-san no biru), they are officially classified as "Other miscellaneous alcohol" or "Liqueur".

I've just tried it and its pretty good! Noticeably fragrant. It says it's made with coriander and orange peel, like Hoegaaten is, but isnt cloudy or wheaty. Its just a clear, whitish lager that light and quite summer-y. I'll buy six not two next time! :thumbsup:
