Popular Post muikabochi 208
I have had my eye on today since earlier this week as it was always looking like it would clear up and be fab weather. The question was.... where to go. I found myself on the Kanetsu this morning going over to Minakami and the fantastically awesomely beautiful surroundings of Tanigawa, along with the always annoying ski-jo that is Tanigawadake Tenjindaira. I'll put the rant in spoilers, as lots of it is similar to last year. And the year before. But it needs to be said! So, fantastic blue skies this morning. Lots of 'ants' walking up the mountain. Yes, it's just beautiful up there. OK so I knew it only opens at 9am so only turn up at 8:50. Big long queue waiting for the lift ticket counter to open. You can see they are stood there actually waiting for 9am before they open up the counter. So it opens at 9am sharp, or should I say they start to prepare to open at 9am. So of course that takes a few minutes. Then there's only one dude doing the tickets. And of course, he's slow. So it's 9:15am before I can get on the gondola. I just missed one and so needed to wait 2 hours for the next one. Well, a few minutes. Blimey they only have a few gondolas going at the same time. And of course, it's ridiculously slow and I completed a novel and read a few books on the journey. Get up top and it's already past 9:30am. I see the main pair lift is still not open but see that the lift far left is moving so ski down to that lift. 'Mada desu'. Not open yet. We aren't sure when it will open, they said, so please use that lift up there... you know, the one you have to walk up to over there. Why are you so late in opening? Well, we staff only get up here 15 minutes before you do! I decided not to suggest that perhaps the staff could get up there earlier to prepare, but decided that it must just be a ridiculous concept. I saw quite a few people ski down to that lift like I did only to have to walk back up the slope to get the lift that was actually moving. No sign at all saying the lift was not open yet. Every time I go, I get the feeling at Tenjin that opening a skijo is actually really bothersome for them. Extremely annoying, like Japanese banks. Note to self. Think of Tenjin as opening at 9:45am to avoid frustration next time. In no particular order, all taken from within the skijo area.

onehunga 26
Great photos. I was thinking about making a day trip from Kusatsu to there. However I think the lift issues would have me spitting the dummy and spoiling my day. Will have to day trip somewhere else instead.

pie-eater 207
None of these hikers appear to be naked though, so obviously that's a few gnarly points taken off. Looks like you had a fine day muikabochi. Ii ne.
muikabochi 208
onehunga As you can tell, some of the things about it really are irritating. I don't do the hiking thing so for me the only reason to go here is the location and scenery, as it's just a really small place. Perhaps they know people will go anyway for the hiking and the location, so they don't need to put any kind of effort into it. I don't know, it's just odd. Just once a year I think, on a day like today.

2pints-mate 0
"We open late because we only get up here 15 minutes before you" That attitude sucks. WTF?! Incredible scenery though.
mina2 6
muika, great work chap! Question - where is this taken from? I just can't work it out!!
mina2 6
Oh yes one thing worth mentioning, before 19th January they open on weekdays at 8am. I don't know why the 19th has significance but... Also on weekends they open 7am. Of course add the ticket window and slow gondola times on to those for a realistic starting time! Though I think the gondola speeds up when they are busy. Still, it is strange the late opening and I can imagine frustrating. I have always gone once it is already open so not encountered it.

Gunma Boarder 14
I was driving to Okutone for some after work nighta and wondered if you might have been/were up at Tenjin. I guess the answer was yes! Not quite the same but I at least got to see Tanigawa before the sunset. Not as impressive but Okutone gives you an interesting angle. Beautiful set of pics as always!
