DumbStick 13
I've just been looking at that too, hmmm that does look interesting. And all for about 50,000 yen too. You can use the internet in the bathroom too. That's getting silly. But worth pointing out that it isn't just for the bathroom, but for anywhere including outside. Just checked on the Yamaha tv option in the catalogue. 230,000 yen plus installation. And all it does is chideji, so no recording/DNLA/connectivety. Wow, that is so way overpriced! I can see the value of having it permentantly stuck on the wall and not needing to charge (if you intend on having it in the bath all the time), but...
NoFakie 45
It's the same with sat navs in cars, esp. the car maker ones. You pay a fortune for electronics with limited functions from a non-electronics manufacturer. Even if you don't want tv, a bluetooth speaker in your bathroom would give you tunes for no setup cost or hassle.
grungy-gonads 54
Wonder if they make a ton of cash on options like that. Must be a huge markup. Some people with lots of money and lack of interest in researching I suppose would just see them there and go for the convenience. Or just think that's the only thing possible if you want a tv. Which no doubt means there's little incentive for the manufacturers to keep on updating them either. Does the Yamaha option have a brand name on it, DumbStick?
DumbStick 13
Just got the catalogue here with me now, gg, can't see a brand name on the photo of it. And there's no mention of a brand in the text either. It does look rather basic. And 12" too, not 15". Will that be made by a Sharp/Panasonic of the world or something? klingon 10
Not that I want a tv in the bathroom but that is an interesting bit of kit.

snowdude 44
Although it is an interesting concept, I would not want a TV in the bath. For me a bath is a place to relax not to have my brain fried by some crappy brain draining rubbish that they call TV in Japan. It is like our bath has this silly smart phone connectivity facility thingy that I have never used and will never use I am sure, we didn't ask for it, it comes with the unit that we ordered. Our toilets also have remote controls that again we didn't need, but they come with the toilets, so far except to switch on the seat heater I have never used it. It has automatic flushing, which I stopped, I hate that. I can flush the toilet from the remote which I never use, but again because we ordered the more expensive toilet it is included. I like modern Gadgets, but I think Japan goes over the top with somethings, and would be better off tidying up the shambles of wires they have hanging around all over the country bringing electric to peoples houses. The streets in a lot of the big towns, cities look like third world countries with all the wires everywhere. The wiring on a lot of old buildings aint much better either. grungy-gonads 54
fried by some crappy brain draining rubbish that they call TV in Japan. Well, if you notice, with this machine you can watch movies or anything else you have recorded on it / your main network recorder. For example, from skyperfect. I see you can even 'continue' from where you left off the previous evening. So it's not limited to crappy Japanese tv.
snowdude 44
Well that is good for those interested in it as you can watch whatever you like, but I still wouldn't want it in the bathroom. That's just me though.

Alexander L 80
I am too busy in the Onsen washing some local back, to watch to TV Each to his own. I would feel too gay to be even imagining I could do that.
Tachypsychia 13
I am too busy in the Onsen washing some local back, to watch to TV Each to his own. I would feel too gay to be even imagining I could do that. Man's comfortable with his sexuality. Some would say even being naked with other men in a room would be gay. But those people are idiots! My favorite onsen in town has a big screen in the sauna. Sadly its usually local TV and I can't keep my eyes open long enough to watch. Way too damn hot in there.
griller 9
Well, all I can say is if I find the idea pretty horrible then perhaps I'm "not comfortable with my sexuality". Even though I am.

grungy-gonads 54
I like rubbing naked female backs. Does that confirm my sexuality, or does it mean that I actually fancy blokes?
Biggen 3
I said the locals because it an act of camaraderie. If ask by a around eye to wash his back I probably would also as a act of camaraderie but the chances are the eyed round is gay with a dirty back. I think gay people respect the culture of the Onsen and not go around hit up a follow user. If I was at the karaoke bar I would decline if ask to wash another mens back. And yes I do enjoy the act. I take it as a sign of acceptance by the locals. and this make me happy.
snowdude 44
I certainly wont be scrubbing anyones back except for my wifes. I know it is custom in Japan but it is a custom I do not wish to follow. No way.

@tokyo 14
Sorry recap - is this actually a custom? I've never heard of it and been to a fair few onsen with friends. Are you sure we're talking humans, not monkeys?
Biggen 3
Sorry recap - is this actually a custom? I've never heard of it and been to a fair few onsen with friends. Are you sure we're talking humans, not monkeys? Yes it is a culture custom @Tokyo, mostly pertenting to Shudan (groups). In Japanese society, group consciousness is learnt from an early age in the Family, which is the most important primary group for individual. The family provides the context in which socialisation takes place, as well as patterns of interaction that applied in other secondary Shudan (groups) such as neighbourhood cliques, clubs and shudan in the workplace. these Shudan are treated like a secondary families. This is why when a local offer to wash my back, I take it, that they high respect me and see that i am worthy of being part of their secondary family and that the local or locals consider me as a very very close friend. There is a big difference between being class as an acquaintance to being part off friendships in the Japanese society. You would not pick up on your mannerisms toward the locals that they would deem as a individual lacking insight toward their culture. The local are not going to take you aside and tell you of your sort coming toward Japanese culture. EG your referral to the back washing custom as a act only Monkeys participate in. These people who you accompany to the Onsens with, are only being Japanese and that is being polite. You know yourself that you have not gone out of you way to deeply understand the culture and until you do, you will always will be treated as a acquaintance. @Tokyo I am not having a go at you, just telling you how it is in Japanese culture Shudan has a - on top of the u
