HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
I'm pretty handy at ipponbashi though.... consistently 12+ seconds. (You need to be over 10 seconds to not have points decucted. And fail if you fall off).
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
Watch me fail on that now after saying that.
Tubby Beaver 209
Wots ipponbashi?
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
Got to stay on it and finish it without falling off the side, in 1st gear, and stay on for more than 10 seconds. Less than 10 seconds and theres points decucded. Fall off the line and your test is finished!
Tubby Beaver 209
Ah it's like a balance test!! I looked it up and the translation was "log bridge".....couldn't think what it'd be.....kind of make sense now tho
snowdude 44
Yes just a raised square beam that you drive across with a small slope each end. Both easy and difficult, depending on your balancing luck on the day.
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
Well, not really, it depends on your skill level. Luck only comes into it if you aren't much good and don't know how to control the bike. At first I had big problems with it. The last 50 times I have cleared it without any problems. pie-eater 207
It all sounds like a lot of fun actually this lot. Are bikes generally cheap here in Japan?
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
It's not cheap and it's a committment with time as well but... I have really enjoyed it. After being very sceptical, I can actually see now why there are so many lessons - I'm a decent bike rider I reckon now! Fit to be on the roads. Which is more than you can say about some punks back home! There's plenty of time to get your own habits once you're out there but going out there as a solid and technically decent rider can't be a bad thing. I'll no doubt get annoyed if I fail for some silly reason, but hoping I can get it done in just one test.
Tubby Beaver 209
Stem can show you the appropriate bow and deferential way to say "hai"
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
I haven't had any of that (yet) by the way, mine has been almost all practical. Maybe I'm in for that lot in the last lesson!
Tubby Beaver 209
Gambatte!!
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
Gambarimasu! (Clenched fist and stern look of determination!)
surfarthur 22
We really could do with a gambarimasu emoji. Good luck with your test.
Tubby Beaver 209
How are they made? Are they designed at some emoji central holding and websites use their code….pay for new ones….or do the websites themselves have to make them up?
Tubby Beaver 209
Oh….Ex-NOVA…..are those bikes you use provided from the test centre or do you have to buy a bike first? silly question perhaps, but….
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
The school has the bikes and you use them. (I do not know if you can take your own or not but everyone I have seen learning has been doing it on these bikes). Actually, no I bet you have to use those bikes. Reason? They have a special set of coloured lights on the front and back that show what gear you are in and when you are applying the front and back brakes. This not only helps you know what you are doing but also tells the instructors/judges what you are doing. When I pass I'm going to get my licence and then go down to the local big bike shop for a few test rides and probably quickly end up getting my own bike!
Tubby Beaver 209
then go skidding past the test centre, wobbling and giving them the V?
634-maru 4
How did it go then?
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
I passed! Thought it might would be borderline as I finished up as there were a few "imperfections" that I knew about, but luckily I didn't wipe out on any of the "instant fail" things which was a relief. Anyway they passed me so all that lot doesn't matter now! Have to go and get my license now. And a bike!
muikabochi 208
Well done, Sir!
Tubby Beaver 209
Congrats!! I take it your humble bow was tip top!
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
Actually, I didn't bow at all. I thought I'd feel ridiculous and anyhow they hadn't actually told me to do anything like that. I was too busy trying to concentrate anyway. I think stemik just came across a particularly crusty old tool there!
Wizz 11
Omedeto! You decided what you are going to get yet?
stemik 14
Well done! My bike is being collected on Friday and being put into storage until April. it will be sad to see it go...but it has been fricking freezing riding these last few days.
