Voted for last 2 weeks of Jan. It has been very reliable in past but have been later in season eg late Feb early march and was still good and less crowded. A few more clear days in the mix for late Feb / March.

Almost every year I've been in Japan there has been a rain event in the first or second week of Feb. that has ruined a day or two (once even a three day stretch. I've never seen that happen in January though, so last two weeks of Jan got my vote!

Rain is just the worst. I remember a few years back I was in Hakuba for the rain event and it wasn't fun.

You could tell everyone was miserable too.

Zao has had an interesting and somewhat odd season.

 

Lots of snow later on, the monsters were rained on in early February but made an impressive come back.

 

The snow has stuck around for longer than usual.

I would hate to get to Zao and the monsters be in bad shape, it's so much part of the experience over there.
