Plenty of flat roofs in Kutchan. It's generally so you can build closer to your boundary. If you have a roof that sheds the snow you need room for it to shed and not encroach on your neighbours land (

Though its news is not new, you do get some good stuff in the Japan Times. I hope it can keep going in years to come.   Since most Japanese old houses sell at deep discounts to when they were new, i

By the common understanding, I don't think 2 by 4 is a "frame" house. 2 by 4 are used as studs that are sandwiched by plywood which acts as bracing to make structural, i.e, load bearing walls. Remove

That's the one.

I didn't include lots of 'stuff' and outside work in my 50%.

Scary thinking about it really!

But yes, it will be hopefully very nice being able to enjoy and live in it rather than just being a number.

That wallpaper machine looks interesting... Is that a standard thing here?

Do many people even do their own wallpapering here, can't say I've heard of anyone doing it..

I do my own wallpapering. Wallpapered and painted well actually reformed my mother in-laws house a few years ago.

But not many Japanese do decorating they normally ask a company to do for them.

No of course not. But in a few years time once the paper starts getting tatty then I will do it myself.

With a new house whether I paper the house or they do it the price is the same so of course I am going to let them do it.

Parts of our place were left unfinished, so I ended up wallpapering inside a couple of closets. In hindsight, I should have just paid the dude. The bits I had to do were under a 45 degree roof and a corner with two 45 degree roofs, so it was a bit of a nightmare. I could barely get the stepladder in.

Why of course not?

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be sarcastic or anything.

Sorry. I meant as it is a new house being built it is better to let them paper it than me especially as it costs the same.

Stemik, you should pretend that workmen are coming every day and put snacks out.

When they don't come, enjoy scoffing on the snacks!

Make sure they are your favourite snacks, to avoid any disappointment.

That should really be in the Top Tips thread.

I've watched my father curse and swear too many times while wallpapering our house.....I'd rather just pay a pro to do it

Same here.

It did not seem worth it.

And frankly, it could have been done better.
