Some people say that Hakkoda is flat and boring

It hardly compares favorably with Yuzawa (80 minutes) and Nagano places (a bit more).

 

Yes, but as Yamabushi tells us, those places are "not "conducive" to backcountry skiing. cough cough Minakami cough cough Kagura ....

The other thing with Hakkoda is really that unless you live in the area, there ain't a whole lot of else in the nearby.

 

It's not like, say, Hakuba that has lots of different resorts within a 10-20-30 minutes drive.

 

Still I would like to go sometime soon.

Been to Hakkoda last year for a week. It was easily enough. It's bloody flat, especially if it snows. Snowboarders beware and bring ski poles (like all the other snowboarders to get you over the flat bits).

 

There were some great sections but the weather and the lack of steepness are two big issues.
