Chriselle 158
You know....I've been thinking of letting my current iphone 4 contract to run out and once it does maybe go back to the "dasai" flippy. In its place I would like to get a portable wifi as I carry my iPad with me all the time but it's not a 3g version. A friend has a portable wifi and seems to work pretty well. Since getting the iPad doing anything on the iPhone ....other than calling has lost its appeal..
NoFakie 45
In some countries and on some carriers, you are allowed to use an iphone as a personal wifi ("mifi") on an unlimited plan. That's without jailbreaking the phone. Anyway, it means that some mobile providers somewhere accept that its a legitimate use.
Slippery Jim 65
I'm also looking at the portable wifi deals, almost half the cost of unlimited smartphone access. Add a good tablet w/skype and a bluetooth headset and you've got unlimited intl calling for pennies.

Tubby Beaver and I know of someone who tried to use their phone once, as an access point, only to find unlimited data for PC wasn't included on his bill, and came out to be over 1million yen... NoFakie 45
Whoops! If mifi in Japan means Wimax, it doesn't look like coverage in inaka is quite up to scratch just yet.

Mick Rich 78
After recently doing the same thing and giving up my Willcom tin cans and string for an iPhone 4S my bills are only just over 6k. That covers everything.......free emails, Internet pack and free calls to designated friends n family AU phones. I'm always online, using Facebook, BBC etc etc. it took me a long time to get on the smartphone wave but I love my iPhone I may well be following your lead TB!! Having originally been against buying an iPhone, I'm now thinking about getting an i4S! Why the sudden change of heart? Well I popped into the Omotesando Softbank today and saw that the i4S is free (though I didn't ask what memory size one it was), so I guess AU may soon be offering something similar, if not already, given the pending arrival of the i5. Softbank also confirmed that there would be no penalty charge to pay if I moved to another network this month. So having just read my way through this post... http://www.snowjapan...__fromsearch__1 I'm seriously tempted to jump ship and enter the brave, new, Smartphone world with AU! One question for AU iPhone users, can you now use Hotmail on the KDDI/AU network, as previously it seemed as though you could only check, rather than send emails, or am I talking out of my backside?? Metabo Oyaji 71
980 yen a month! Wow that is cheap. Mine is about 6500 now that I have paid up for the machine, that included unlimited data though. I think it's worth it. That is cheap. Think it's time to go through my contract options with a fine-toothed comb and see what the heck is in there.

oblivion 5
Mine is about 9500 yen as well but 4000 or so of that is for the phone so my phone/data seems to be around 5500.

RobBright 35
Wait a bit for AU as they are getting the new super fast LTE network from this Autumn.
Tubby Beaver 209
Other than the hotmail thing, AU have been great. Better coverage than when I was with Softbank

NoFakie 45
My missus picked up the au catalogue today and for some reason, it doesn't compare the iphone with the other smartphones. Its not on the table showing the different features and isn't even listed as an au smartphone. Its treated completely separately as the iPhone by au. This may be an au move, not an Apple one, but is just begging to be mocked and derided. Given that Apple gave us the "sent from my Iphone" signature, I wouldn't be surprised if it's their doing. Thundercat 60
There is something to that though as it is only a limited distribution through au. You can't just walk into any au shop... only certain ones are designated to sell the iPhone.
grungy-gonads 54
Apple are without doubt a peculiar company. Kind of really respect how they seemingly do whatever they like. I wonder if one day their pig-headed ness will come and bite them on the bottom.
grungy-gonads 54
I went into au today. The guy told me they absolutely no information whatsoever from Apple about the iPhone
