It said it would "identify, monitor, control and react to" any air threats or unidentified flying objects coming from the sea.

Aliens in their UFOs need to be notified as well, it seems.

Chinese pilots conducted their first patrol of a controversial new "air defence zone" over the East China Sea at the weekend, amid warnings that Beijing's move could trigger a potentially catastrophic miscalculation.

Japan and China both claim ownership of the uninhabited islands.

Shen Jinke, a spokesperson for China's air force, told state media "two large scouts carried out the patrol mission [on Saturday], with early warning aircraft and fighters providing support and cover."

Catastrophic never sounds good, does it?

A transport ministry official in Seoul told Reuters that South Korean planes flying in the zone would notify China's civil aviation authorities of their flight plans, as would Taiwanese carriers, according to officials in Taipei – which also claims the islands. A Japanese official said companies there would probably need to inform China. The zone covers an area roughly two-thirds the size of the UK.

Seems odd.

The whole thing seems odd.

How can China suddenly just claim this airspace without being laughed at?

To be fair, the Chinese have as much a right to an ADIZ as any other nation.

The point of contention is that they've extended their's to cover the disputed islands.

How are these ADIZ's usually decided then?

Surely not just by the leaders declaring them?

It's a bit Dr Evil isn't it?

The US has flown two B-52 bombers over disputed islands in the East China Sea in defiance of new Chinese air defence rules, officials say.

China set up its "air defence identification zone" on Saturday insisting that aircraft obey its rules or face "emergency defensive measures".

Let's testing!

I'd love to blow up all those rocks and be done with it. China is becoming like that guy on the train who runs back and forth screaming at everybody in incomprehensible Japanese. We all know he's mentally ill, but we just stay quiet and watch wondering when he's going to pipe up again.

I wish Mishima Yukio was around to commit seppuku now rather than 1970. Maybe his buddy Ishihara could do it instead?
