This may change when the Iiyama shink arives in 2015. Madarao Kogen Hotel is the best place I have stayed - ski in & out - great food, super friendly staff, awsome onsen, air hockey! - reasonably priced Low key village but with 4 or 5 other places to eat out once you know your way around. A very liberal off piste policy, in fact they encourage it and continue to open up new tree areas. They have a 60% of all runs ungroomed policy and even leave a fair proportion of the groomed runs ungroomed for a day or so after a storm. There's nothing like skiing a wide open run with 30m or more on top of a firm base. The trees are lift accessable and nicely spaced for geriatrics like my crew and for old bastards the lift prices are in the Y2000 range.
