Just saw this on the side bar next to closer, and thought bloody hell! how did i forget?

as for this... love the mix of baraka and mr bungle. Even if you hate everything else i post, this video is not only awesome, but astonishingly, fan made.

EZLN! I remember first year at university doing the whole cultural theory thing, i had two mexican flatmates, and i was reading this article about the mexican government going to war with its own people in Chiapas. I thought it was some kind of silly future imaginary thing when one of my flatmates pointed out it happened and it was true. I kinda felt stupid. Of course, i dont really care about what happens to anything beyond my nose, so i enjoyed the whole sub commandante marcos spectacle and the arrival of the zapatistas in mexico city to a heroes welcome. So er, thats my rubbish shaggy dog story and also the reason that out of all the RATM songs i could pick, i chose this one. Its the one song that really makes me feel most like an amoral fashion driven MTV asshole. Which of course, i am.

Being only 30 (born in 82) I don't like it when people my age, or even younger, claim to be "a product of the 80's". How can you be a product of something you never truly experienced? I consider myself a product of the 90's. Yes, I remember the 80's somewhat, but I didn't get the full experience that older people did.

The 80's did have some cool stuff though, and some memorable movies :)

Anyway more 90's!!!

My all-time favorite band...been listening for 20 years!

Couldn't find the actual video :( (by the way, the Offspring is playing at Punkspring on March 31!!)

Keep em coming folks!

For Ippy, when it comes to techno and what is or isn't "brutal", I'm a bit of a purist so no hair is too fine to be split! I got into techno from originally liking funk and soul, so I like to hear a bit of "black" groove in there. Conversely, the melodic elements and orchestration of trance does do so much for me.The big "epic" breakdowns they often have are kind of the antithesis of funk where you keep the groove going. Still different stuff for different folks, and if it keeps the party going, its all good.

Compared to the 80s thread, there's not been so much music from the charts, so here's some.

Killer sleazy soul groove and some crazy cars! Snoop!

It's the big payback!

Poor quality audio on this one, but you get the visuals. As good if not better than anything on Three Feet High if you ask me.

Its okay, we come from the same planet (acid house) i reckon. We share the same problem with breaks. Real trance was about repetitive beats not about fluffly lines, hooks and breakdowns...

But to completely invalidate that sentiment... Heres the 5 biggest breakdowns i remember :)

The absolute daddy. I promised i was gonna post it earlier so here it is. (breakdown starts around 1min50)

Gotta have house!

I was actually going to put amphetamine here (objectively a better track but no real break on it), but this was linked in its side bar, and the second i clicked it i realised it needed to be in the 5 just because it never stops building. :)

and finally (though i could go on... (and i could have picked one of about ten tracks by them since they were the masters of the breakdown))

You have no idea the sea of nostalgia im surfing on here. Just hearing this stuff reminds me of so many people i miss

heres a token gesture to commercialism :p

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P41g-8WWudg&ob=av3e&hd=1

(i should state, the video is iconic, but the break in this is actually fanstastic and caught my techno nature by surprise once upon a time, its so... 'still' would probably be the best word to describe it)... alas i had to pick between the video and the break.

Jega came to play the Newcastle Riverside, I was chatting away to one of my mates telling them all about how i LOVED this track, but hated the rest of the album, There was a dude that seemed to be taking an unusual interest in the conversation... about an hour later i saw him on stage, ... i think i pissed him off... the ****er never played dmc :))

A confession... this was the genre of music that killed it all for me.

I stopped enjoying music at almost exactly this point in my life because it just went so beyond what i was prepared to tolerate. I think mealtime was the last album i ever got pleasure listening to. And even then it was pushing it. After this it just felt like id gone as far as i was prepared to go with electronic music and i either had to admit that braindance was "music" or go crawl back into safer terrain. I went backwards into the classics (Ray charles, the beatles, the dead kennedys, and even CSNY). I still feel a profound sense of failure :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYhSuSJ15ys

And just for the **** of it, the other wall i couldnt get over (as it happens, only a month or so ago i had this discussion with one of my coteachers (the dude is a massive music geek), and he tried to explain to me what brotzmann was doing... he said that contra coltrane and colemann, brotzmann was massively AGAINST expression. His aim was to create a mechanical sound devoid of the human element, dunno if thats true, but it offers a somewhat charming (and after the event) explanation of why i personally felt both these spheres of music were kinda at my limit):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWiO5SFoh8g

And since im not playing by the mans rules of this thread right now! (free spam!); here is why i love music... (and what braindance and brotzmann took away from me (temporarily i hope... maybe in twenty years time ill come back to it)).

But heres some acid because i just refound this album:

I just can't get that into music, for me its simply noise......either noise I like or noise I don't like.........of course I like the memories that come back when I hear a particular song from my past, but I can't subdivide and analyse music the way some people do
