snowdude 44
During the New year period on the way to visiting my wifes relatives in Kobe, we stopped of at Shirakawago in northern Gifu and Gokaiyama in Toyama prefecture. I have been wanting to go there for many years and finally decided to go this year. We left our house in Yamanashi and drove to Takayama first where we stopped had lunch took a few pics of the old houses and streets, before then heading to Shirakawago in norther Gifu, which is a national heritage. After spending a couple of hours or so there, we then drove over the border into Toyama and stopped at a small village called Gokaiyama, like Shirakawago, but smaller and far less tourists around, which was lovely. After spending a night in one of the old houses here in this beautiful village the next day we drove back down into Gifu prefecture, through Aichi prefecture, back into southern Gifu, through Shiga, Kyoto and then into Hyogo prefecture before eventually arriving at Kobe. After spending a few days here we headed over to Nara prefecture, somewhere I we hadn't been to for about 6 years and re-visited the Daibutsu (bronze budder) the biggest in Japan! I have put a few pics up of Gifu and Toyama and will put some pics up of hyogo and Nara prefectures later, when I get time! Outside Takayama station! River view from one of the back streets Back street Back street with all the old black wood houses, very nice! Shirakawa-go historical village The local village shrine A view of the whole village from above On the way To Toyama pref, Gokayama! The B&B where we stayed for the night! Was really puking it down with snow! The next day after heavy snowfall during the night! A picture using the fish eye lens on my smart phone! The road in and out of the village! NoFakie 45
I've never been in winter. It looks great! They light them up every year in February, but if that brings lots of tourists, it might be better at other times.

snowdude 44
Hi snowdude I was just looking at your pics. That place is near the top of my "really want to go" list. Very nice. Just in case anyone misses it once the photos get moved along on the index page: http://www.snowjapan...okaiyamatoyama/ You should go if you get the chance and if you can, stay over night in one of the houses, I can even give you the number of the place we stayed with, he will show you some traditional instruments unique to that area which you can try and play! The food was nice too, Japanese food obviously, but never the less nice! I also want to see it in summer!

Metabo Oyaji 71
That is a place I have wanted to visit for a long time. Do you have any pictures of the inside of the B&B, by any chance? Can you see the original architecture inside at all, or is it all modernized?
snowdude 44
Sorry not really got any pics of the inside, nothing worth putting up here. It has been modernised unfortunately, and cleaned, but the actual structure, roof, rafters are all original, including the fire place in the tatami floor that they still use for heating and cooking today. The roof has been replaced as they have to replace them every 20-30 years, but re-done exactly as the original roof. The shrine that we went into that day was all original including the flooring, walls, everything!
