JellyBelly 1
I can't help but notice the somewhat startling difference in snow depths reported at Nozawa and Shiga Kogen. They're not that far from each other are they? Nozawa is approaching 3m while Shiga Kogen lingers on about 60cm.
iiyamadude 6
It seems more marked this season, well so far, but Nozawa is being dumped on brilliantly this month. I was there yesterday and it was pretty mad. Couldn't see much, but untouched powder everywhere you looked. Even in the village! Great stuff. Here's the only photo I took:

Sciclone 2
This is not what I want to hear.. it's less than 3 weeks til we get to SK and the base isn't quite there.. I'm hoping it does its usual trick and absolutely dump down over NY's
Slippery Jim 65
Nozawa is officially in Nagano, but for weather purposes think of it as part of the general Myoko region. Snow clouds hit Nozawa before they get to Shiga Kogen. Sciclone, I wouldn't worry about mid-January at Shiga as far as having plenty of snow; powder is, of course, always a matter of luck. muikabochi 208
Yes it's more an extension of Niigata! Neighbouring Tsunan and Tokamachi always get dumped on crazy too. The base of Yamanouchi town never gets anywhere near as much.
tokabochi 9
It's that band of area isn't it clockwise Myoko > Tokamachi > Minamiuonuma > Yuzawa > Naeba > Nozawa > Myoko. That whole area often gets dumped on in style.
NoFakie 45
I don't know the details of that area, but in this region as a whole there are loads of microclimates. Shade, prevailing winds, and altitude are all major factors. I suppose the main thing is to not put off a trip to Nozawa say because there is no snow by the road through Iiyama. There could be two feet of fresh on the mountain.
Tubby Beaver 209
Noz has loads its Shiga that is relatively spartan
tokabochi 9
Perhaps Mr Wiggles was referring to the fact that there can sometimes be relatively less snow on the main Route 117 as you whizz past Nozzle. And remember Nozzle has one of the biggest "verticals" of resorts in Japan, as can easily be seen here: http://www.snowjapanresorts.com/
hellyer 216
True tokabochi that Nozawa has a decent vertical but at a top elevation of just 1560m (from memory) it is way lower than the top lift at Shiga (Yakoteyama 2,300m)
muikabochi 208
snowjunky... I am guessing that the point tokabochi was making was.... you can be driving past Nozzle on Route 117 and there not look like there's masses of snow. But, go 5km on the road up to the village, and then get up to the top and there's tons and tons. That's what Mr Wiggles was saying too. I think.
hellyer 216
Yes , can't argue with that
tokabochi 9
Yes that was my point
muikabochi 208
I'm sure it's fine but I hope SK gets a big dump soon, I hope to go in January.
