I'll be arriving in Tokyo on the 5th Dec 2011 and leaving on the 23rd Dec 2011.

Is it too early in the season to go snowboarding?

Do I need to book accommodation/flights to Sapporo or can I just wing it when I get to Japan?

Where does the snow fall first?

Can someone reassure me? I'm getting a little nervous that I have booked these flights too early because I saw a good deal.

Cheers,

Richard

Pray for an early season.

Realistically, conditions should be OK by mid-December.

If you're lucky, it'll be good to very good by the time you get to Hokkaido.

If you're unlucky, conditions will be pretty bad to not-so-good.

And if you're terribly unlucky, at least the beer's good.

In 8 seasons in Niseko the best early start I recall was in 2005 when they opened lifts on 19 Nov. Already had close to 1.4m cover on the upper slopes by that date. The latest start was 2003 which still only had 1.7m on the upper mountain by the end of Dec. Last season was pretty late as well with barely any runs open until mid Dec. Most years there is skiable snow by early Dec but don't expect all terrain to be open. Unless there's been really good early falls there is often not a lot of skiable off-piste terrain until after Christmas unless you're happy to ski through lots of sasa.
