muikabochi 208
It was on the news today that the locals have decided that the best name for the new Shinkansen station near Joestsu on the new shink line would be "Myoko Takada". Sounds like a good name to me, I bet Myoko will be happy.
tokabochi 9
Wonder if there's underhand $$$$ involved in things like this.... who gets to decide? JR?
RobBright 35
Without sounding ignorant, but does this make much of a difference besides a change of names?
Tubby Beaver 209
how close to Myoko is the station?
grungy-gonads 54
Without sounding ignorant, but does this make much of a difference besides a change of names? I would image it would make a whole world of difference if the name Myoko was in it or not. At least to the people of Myoko.
NoFakie 45
Without sounding ignorant, but does this make much of a difference besides a change of names? Doesn't "new station" mean that its a newly built one on the existing line, i.e., a new stop?
RobBright 35
But surely naming a station is just a name, being someone who snowboards, distance to resort would be more important.
iiyamadude 6
For sure. But the station is half built, the location determined. So nothing can be done about that now. For the people promoting Myoko, which is preferable - a nearby Shinkansen station with the word Myoko in it, or a nearby Shinkansen station without the word Myoko in it? Echizen 0
I think also Iiyama station is not decided name yet. right? They discuss whether name 'nozawa' is included.
Slippery Jim 65
More importantly, when does the extension open?
pie-eater 207
Seriously, they thinking of having the name Nozawa in the station at Iiyama?

scouser 4
Yep great big new shinky station.
NoFakie 45
Facepalm from me too because its not an existing line, its the new one. I had a look at the map and if its in Takada, Joetsu, that's still a fair way to Myoko. The itsumo-navi site said it was 36km from the existing JR Takada station in Joetsu to Suginohara. Most of that's highway, but it costs money for buses to run on the highway too.
iiyamadude 6
Ah I get it now. I was getting confused with all that lot.
ILoveZao 8
Deciding on the name of a new Shinkansen station is a big deal for everyone involved. I suppose "Joetsu" just wouldn't be that interesting for that region. The words Myoko and Takada are both very well known and probably the best name for it cosidering where it is. NoFakie 45
Apparently they had a poll and first and second were names with "Echigo" in them. The Myoko Takada name was a distant third.
TheOriginalMyoko 0
Indeed, but you can be sure that the people in Myoko will have very much wanted Myoko in it. The ones in Joetsu may not care so much. Not everyone voting was doing so thinking about ski resorts in Myoko. For the general public, I do think that Myoko Takada is a decent choice. ippy 66
woohoo! that might actually mean they bother laying on more than one bus a day to suginohara!

Out of curiosity, how did it end up being selected? Poll had no bearing? Am I the only one who wants to read that as "Myoko Koden"?
