Great East Japan Earthquake - our guide to the events of March 11th and what it means for Japan

Recommended Posts

A very good balanced account of the whole thing.

Glad to see you got feedback from lots of different places too, always interesting to hear what other people experienced.

Added the interesting Japan Quake Map link to the Resources page of the guide and a few more entries on the Experiences page.

There is an earlier version of Prof. Hayakawa's contour map on his blog, made about two weeks earlier. It looks almost identical, except that the shape around Gunma changed somewhat, and the stuff up north around Ichinoseki in Iwate was not included. But contours for Fukushima, Miyagi, Tochigi, Ibaraki and Chiba look about the same. I suspect he added more sampling points around Gunma (where he lives) and Ichinoseki for the current plot.

With the caveat that I am certainly not an expert on environmental radioactive contamination (just been learning what I can the past three months, as have we all), my guess would be that the maps won't change very quickly from here on out. It is probably mostly ground contamination being measured (since the major atmospheric releases happened back in March), and that is mostly Cesium-137, with a 30-year half-life (the shorter-lived Iodine-131 having already decayed away at this point).

But as I said, I am not an expert.

Very interesting.

It sure is going to be interesting to see how the overseas market responds in the end. I reckon people will be back but will leave it later. Unless something baaad happens.

Lady Gaga says it's ok, so it must be! wink

That kind of thing is pretty much expected pie-eater - being the 'main page', the one that is linked to, etc. Often in a section that kind of pattern happens for one reason and another. We've tried to make the links as clear as possible to the pages in the section.
