snowbender 3
It's got a big nob-end top bit hasn't it, overhanging.
BeerTengoku 35
I don't get the whole tower thing. Seems like just such a waste of public funds. I remember going up in the CN tower in Toronto thinking the same thing....really, what's the ****ing point. Towers seem to fall into the ,, more money than brains category. Fail You do know that it is also replacing Tokyo Tower for TV and radio broadcasts as well across the kanto plains?
Chriselle 158
Well, yes...of course. That's pretty much its ONLY use right? My point is build a frickin building that actually has some sort of function and if need be throw a radio tower on the top of it.
snowbender 3
But then they wouldn't be able to say its the biggest goddam tower, etc. Or sell souvenir key rings and stale cakes.
muikabochi 208
Stale cakes I'm sure there's some nice ones too
snowdude 44
I saw that on the news this morning. Why is this a problem for Skytree and not other, er, tall buildings?! Because the top of the tower is around 600 metres, other buildings are no where near as high, and usually Tokyo doesn't freeze, at most they only get a few nights in January where the temps hit zero, at 600 metres it is going to be at least 5oC colder than that! ILoveZao 8
I don't know the economics of it, but they seem to really be hoping that it will be a major Tokyo tourist attraction. Tell you what, it's one place I certainly would not like to be in the case of a big earthquake!!
grungy-gonads 54
It would not be my first choice of place either. Then again, I don't know where I would #choose to be in such an event.
Tubby Beaver 209
the news piece about ice was on earlier in december as well.......giant chunks were falling into neighbouring apartment blocks and smashing shit up. Is Tokyo tower gonna get pulled down then? If not, what else will that do.......apart from sell stale cakes?
Alexander L 80
I would like to go up. It'll be ace.
oo 1
I see that Skytree is about to open. Also see that the shopping bit at the bottom is called Solamachi. Presumably they consulted and know that 空 is actually Sora, not Sola?
miller 1
I noticed that too on a report they had going on over the weekend. You've got to think "surely not" and its intentional.
@tokyo 14
Opens tomorrow - at last!
yoroshiku onegai shimasu 2
Not very good weather for the opening. Do you need to book tickets in advance? (I'm pretty sure you might at the beginning, but once things 'calm down'?)
7-11 2
They could have put more branches on it, considering they called it Skytree.
pie-eater 207
It doesn't reach the sky either! Got to not want to go up there on a cloudy day. Especially as you need to take a loan out to afford the trip!
JellyBelly 1
I think it goes something like this. Until July 10th, needs to be booked. And is sold out. For afterwards, you can book online and they will have 10,000 (?) tickets per day on sale actually there.
grungy-gonads 54
2000 + 1000 yen to get up there. And presumably down again.
BeerTengoku 35
That's if the high winds don't stop the lift, like they did today.
snowdude 44
Saw that the lifts were stopped so people could not go up but were able to go down because of the wind. Glad I didn't go today would have been a complete waste of money not being able to see sod all because of the rain and cloud.
tokabochi 9
I didn't realise it was twice the height of Eiffel Tower.
mitchpee 10
Does anyone know if you can get on the outside of the tower easily? Is there an observation deck that's not blockaded in by windows?
muikabochi 208
I think that is most definitely "no".
Karnidge 2
Do you want to jump off it, Mitch?
grungy-gonads 54
I would not like to be stuck up there with tons if people and the lifts not moving
