frannyo 2
Yep, some people are going way ott with it all. Predictably.
BillTheBinMan 0
Apparently the 28 degrees number is the maximing of the range laid out by some law in the 70's. I think it said that a workplace needs to be between 17 degrees and 28 degrees throughout the year or something. So that's the maximum out of that range.
BillTheBinMan 0
Mine is set at 25. Sorry, can't do any better than that. I'll gambaru in other areas.
Thundercat 60
We haven't even switched on the AC once at home yet. We don't often use it anyway... only a couple of times a year. I exercise quite a bit throughout the summer without using AC (the city gym doesn't have it either) and I've found that doing that has made it much much easier to deal with this hot weather. Ocean11 0
On Closeup Gendai tonight, they're featuring old folks of 97 who are sitting in their kotatsu in 32 degree heat. A doctor is going around urging them to put the aircon on. What Closeup Gendai hasn't thought to ask yet it is ... why?
tokabochi 9
Yeah I have that on here now. I was just mentioning to my friend here to please tell her parents not to be silly and keep it turned off. It really is dangerous all this pressure.

Ms Gonad's father is a bit of a stickler for the rules and on top of that likes the heat. Her mother doesn't. Feel a bit sorry for her, I'm sure she's not having the most fun right now, hope she is taking refuge in a cooled room.
Ocean11 0
My point was that considering these people are sitting in their kotatsu anyway, they're not troubled with being hot, and people don't live for ever. We're also in the middle of a very long energy crisis, so after an innings of 97 years, is it really necessary to go around urging old people to turn on their very old air conditioners and burn more energy, thus making the world still hotter? If the old ones want their air con on, by all means let them have it, but if they don't care ... some people don't seem to understand the law of diminishing returns ... grungy-gonads 54
I doubt many people analyse 'the law of diminishing returns' when deciding whether to put on their air conditioner or not. You might also need to explain what that even means Ms Gonads certainly is troubled by the heat. That is why I am somewhat worried about her. Old people are actually dying because they are refraining from using cooling systems as they try to be a good citizen. There's a point when it's just too much isn't there. Thundercat 60
I lived through the heat wave in Paris (2003) when old people were dropping like flies. Something like 14,000 people died in France alone. It can be a very very dangerous situation.
HelperElfMissy 42
The elderly are particularly at risk from extremes in temperature. They should be exempt. You can make changes by air conditioning just one room rather than the entire house. Back in the day when the only school airconditioner was in the library and the teachers staff room the classes all up sticks at about 11am and moved classes into these venues together - it was cool, crowded and the learning was adjusted to be of value but not particularly following the curriculum planning IYKWIM. Can not some of these type of changes be made instead of making everyone swelter.
Tubby Beaver 209
the problem is, old people over here feel they have a duty to not put the air con on, probably more than in any other country. In reverse in scotland, old people often die in winter because they don't want to put the heating on for fear of huge bills. The thing is the Government has protected them, saying that they can't be cut off during the winter months.....stupid old people!
RobBright 35
That is weird isn't it - the old people are happy to sponge off the tax system, and claim healthcare, but when it comes to paying for something then they would go without?
gnarly-dude 1
Some feel they have 'earned it'.

That's already how houses here are generally heated or cooled, room-by-room. Don't think I've ever seen a centrally air-conditioned house here. Thing is, seems to me a lot of elder folks' internal thermostats tend to go on a tilt, so sweltering heat may just be what they find comfortable to begin with.
pie-eater 207
I saw a news documentary kind of thing last week it had groups of grannies meeting in a local community centre in an afternoon - they had the aircon on there, saving each granny having to have her own aircon on in their own house. Let's socials!

Let's socials! My town has some of those places going.... encouraging pensioners to come to the community center during the day. They have it nice and cool, and putting on activities and events for them. Good idea it is.
Tubby Beaver 209
I was watching a programme the other day as well that was saying that old people have been offered temporary homes, so they can move out of the shelters/gym halls etc BUT some of them don't want to.....they are enjoying being all together and don't want to go back to living on their own!!
Error404 0
I'm sure there are those people too. Might be a good thing in that way getting all the oldies together and socialising more than they would. Our local community center seems to have that going on weekdays at the moment too.

My Nanna passed away last night...she wait until after her beloved Eagles (AFL) played and won, and went peacefully. She was 87 years old. It is the way it is meant to be - living a full life, surrounded by love and family, living in your own home totally independent until the end - she will be missed.
