gnarly-dude 1
Hi folks. I have seen maps and stuff but wanted a first-hand bit of feedback... how long does the drive from Nozawa to Shiga Kogen usually take? Thanks folks!
iiyamadude 6
It will depend on conditions of course, but in favorable conditions I would say it takes around 25 minutes or so to get to the Yamanouchi town area and then about another 15 minutes to drive up Route 292 to the first part of Shiga Kogen you encounter (Sun Valley / Maruike). I prefer to take the scenic route via Kijimadaira and past Ryouu Ski Park rather than go back onto Route 117. Add another 10-15 minutes to get to either of the extreme areas of Shiga Kogen in the north (Okushiga) or south (Yokoteyama). Snowy or icy and add to that of course.
gnarly-dude 1
Thanking you! You actually like in Iiyama then?
IIIII 2
I suppose it must be because you mentioned it but I didn't think that road was open in winter... I think Nozawa + Shiga Kogen make a great holiday.
robot girl 0
It takes much longer on public transport which is not really convenient between those two place.
best skier in hakuba 5
Not the most convenient trip is it. They could really do with an official daily link up I reckon.
SKI 15
Nozawa. Ryuoo. Shiga Kogen. Sounds like a plan.
geeski 0
I wonder if the Nozawa <> Madarao bus was a success this last season? Anyone use that?
BagOfCrisps 24
We went the way round --- wanted to do some shopping in Iiyama. It's not that far.
abe 0
Be careful on those roads up to Shiga, they are very slippery and I've almost wiped out a couple of times! Make sure you check out Maguse onsen on the way, its between Nozawa and Kita Shiga. Awesome onsen! And don't go by without popping in at Kappa sushi in Iiyama either. abe 0
The road up to Shiga Kogen is pretty slippery even with snow tyres and 4wd. I have almost lost it there a couple of times, take care! Between Noz and Shiga I highly recommend Kappa Sushi in Iiyama and Maguse Onsen (which is near Kijimadaira). Its an awesome onsen! I saw the Nozawa - Madarao bus making quite a few runs with just a couple of people in it, but the people I know who went enjoyed it. Good on them for trying, hopefully it went alright and they can keep it going.
SKI 15
Yes it certainly can be slippy up there. Wonder how many 'incidents' there are up there each season. There must surely be cases of people just getting stuck.
muikabochi 208
The few times I have been up there it has been fairly clear and so I managed fine but I can imagine that being a bit of a nightmare in a blizzard and/or icy conditions.
iiyamadude 6
Not heard on numbers but I sure have seen a few people "stuck" in the years I have been going. Helped one or two as well. Or tried to anyway.
zebedee 1
Does that road get closed in the worst blizzard conditions? I suppose not with it being the only way up there, but how do they cope with it?
iiyamadude 6
I don't think it gets closed, certainly I have never known it to be closed. You just really need to have good tyres and not be silly to go up in bad conditions.
muikabochi 208
They don't check tyres before you start the climb up, do they? Perhaps there aren't that many problems after all.
iiyamadude 6
Certainly never seen anyone checking.
