Kickboxing rocked today, but heck the shins are killer. Got new running shoes fitted by a specialist fitter today to suit my pronation issues and forefoot strike, and off to Physio now. Fingers crossed I can at least reduce the pain because I have a 4.5km event next weekend. Hoping for cool weather but not rain. I don't like running in the rain or the sweltering heat. Picky, huh? I like to run courses I know however, so I can break them up into sections and better pace myself, know where you get a rest etc. So a 5km run becomes say 3 x 9-10 minute sections. HelperElfMissy 42 Posted May 15, 2011 Share Posted May 15, 2011 No more jogging or running for me for a while. Bad news from the Physio. I absolutely have shin splints and bad ones at that, verging on stress fractures. Rest, taped up with black racing stripes right the way up the front of my legs (and they have to stay there for 5 days), and a pile of rehab exercises to do. Back to physio on Friday to find out if I can run in the 4.5km thing on Sunday. I haven't given up on running yet, but it would be nice if it would just cut me some slack and let me learn how to run without any more troubles....please?....too much to ask?... Immediate stop if there is any pain at all - and I am not to trust myself Just because the pain lessens when I am getting warm, does NOT mean it is OK apparently... My plan this week: Sunday: 20km bike Monday: 20km Bike and 1hr Yoga Tuesday: 1hr Swim (gonna look stupid though - with the black tape on my legs! Maybe I should pretend I am Muslim and go in an all in one full leg swimsuit) Wednesday: Toning Class (will walk the sprint sections - mostly weights anyway) Thursday: day off - never get to do anything on a RUGBY day anyway Friday: kickboxing, no sprints no squat jumps etc Reassess then. But I have picked myself up and dusted myself off. Back into it Keen to read about every one elses running achievements, set backs and goals to keep me enthused until I get the go ahead to give it a push myself again. ADD: just wanted to add - the whole running, fitness, cross train thing is ALL about being fit and strong enough to get more and more out of every ski trip. I am a tragic! I had shin splints when I was a teenager, I got special insoles made to correct the way i walked, wore them for about a year, allowed the shin splints to heal and I've never needed them again. (squats instead of squat jumps, power walk instead of run etc) - I managed OK and still got my heart rate up to 150 ish. Certainly not as exhausting a session as I get when running and jumping - but better than nothing. Went to Podiatrist today - orthotics being made (for me AND #3 son) - we both have shin splints. Podiatrist reckons I have stress fractures as well - and I am not surprised. But at least the required changes are being made. Link to post Share on other sites

Anyway enjoying the bike again but not really the jogging. I suppose I would enjoy it more if I was better at it. It just depresses me knowing how crap I am at it though! I am pretty committed because I have to be. I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in my early 20s and since then my metabolism is shot. It is a necessity to keep my weight under control, so instead of look at it as unfair, I choose to make it into athletic challenges. Weights session this morning - felt good. Thinking about investing in one of these so I can "run" without impact...might help me come back from the shin splints without losing cardio fitness. Link to post Share on other sites
